I would say that I'm relatively intelligent. Not the smartest kid in the classroom, mind you, but I do have above a 3.0 gpa in college so far (I go to UC Irvine, if you're wondering). And I graduated top 10% in HS and had 2170 in SAT. Not even close to genius status, but I would say I've generally been on the right side of the bell curve (unless you ask me to do physics).

an IQ test does not go above 140
I've seen tests that extrapolate out past that, and I've scored higher on a state/national test that extrapolated out past that (back in the 80's so it could be bunk). I have heard that once you go out past 2 standards of deviation, the accuracy of tests drops pretty severely.

Where did you hear your information?

Hey, guys and girls. I recently read an article saying that a very large majority of people think they have above average intelligence. Obviously, it's impossible for everyone to be above average, and it seems people aren't as smart as they like to think they are.

I wanted to test this and ask you guys. How smart do you think you are? You can be as modest or arrogant as you like. Honestly, I think I'm above average, if only because I'm around the top percentile in my class.

Then again, The Escapist might be a breeding ground for super-geniuses; you never know...

EDIT: From the numbers so far, it seems most of us aren't lacking in self confidence, but I'm as guilty as any else.

Also, on the issue of whether intelligence refers to IQ, critical thinking, academic performance, creativity, common sense, or something else: Uuuuuuhhhhhh, I dunnnnooo.....
It's the ego that makes the human believe that, that's why everybody think they are over average.

Personally I'm playing dumb, and I'm really good in school and I'm really "street smart" but if you're asking me a test on school level can't tell you if you're smart or dumb, it's life experience, how you act in different situations how you handle life, the truth and pure chaos.

Being skilled on a educated level is intelligence but not in the same way as knowing how to think freely, come up with new ideas and inventions and being a really wise man with a lot of experience. A educated man can still be blind and dumb if he don't know how to think outside the frames, by free will and is possibly manipulated by a system made for controlling.

A man who lives in the forest like a savage nearly doesn't even know how to count to ten (probably) and is probably technically retarded on a educated scale but he knows how to solve every dilemma he comes across and got a real skill for making up new functions on different objects and surviving.

So if you only have one of the sides you're dumb, you gotta have both to be able to function properly in the regular society in most countries, but I still think the educated knowledge is less needed than the common knowledge and basic intelligence if i need to pick one of them.

Do you see what I'm trying to say?

Slightly above average of those in my school would be where I place myself. Compared to some places, definitely average or below. Have never taken a real IQ test, but do have SAT saying "I know math" (790).

I suffered a head injury during a car accident and was sent for a cognitive assessment by my parent's insurance company.

I scored 124, which is above average. (I was told 130+ is considered to be gifted)

I find it kind of funny though how 85% of votes show that they are greater than average. lol :p

I like to tell myself i'm smart, but I know i'm not. Slightly below average is what I'd say. As I assumed every one is "above average".

What a surprise that everyone here thinks they are awesome. That's not a surprise since it seems 90% of the visitors of this site are misanthropes who believe they are the only good thing to ever come of the human race.

In an educated community I think of myself as having average intelligence. However if I go to a public place it seems to be full of people who failed high school, which makes me feel above average.

HAHAHAHAH That poll makes me laugh my ass off. I'm dumb as a brick but at least I'm honest about my intelligence.

Welcome to the fucking escapist, average IQ of 230

As of this post, 441 votes are for above average, 47 for average, and 33 for below average.

People think they're soooooooooo smart.

I know random bits of information that you wouldn't expect especially random things about if you get lost and have to live in the woods and random medical facts. As far as academic smarts go If it's not math I'm pretty good with it.

When I enlisted in the Navy, I was given the ASVAB, as most applicants are, to determine my personal level of smart. I got a 91 out of 99. When I asked what exactly this meant, it means that were I in a room with 99 other Navy applicants (and I'm pretty sure I was at some point,) I would be smarter than 91 of them.

What balances this out, however, is a short attention span and a fairly emotional bent that acts in defiance of logic. This is what caused me to not pursue a waiver for my ADHD when the Navy found out about it, and get shipped out of boot camp as a result.

So now, I consider myself smart enough to realize I'm not as smart as I think I am, and while I'm smart enough to learn from my mistakes, I'm still dumb enough to make them in the first place.

If I go by my grades, I'd have to say average. Then again all of my friends are geniuses.... so I still think I'm average
