Over the course of roughly 2 years now I've gone from sitting around not doing anything to having a regular workout routine. But over the course of this time, my goals have changed with my progress.

This got me thinking about the general community of us Escapists: How do you work out? Why do you work out? Do you even work out at all?

Personally, I started working out for health concerns. 6 straight years of sitting on my rear end doing nothing (and within those years, at least 2 were spent eating nothing but chips and pizza and drinking nothing but soda pop) was really getting to me. I started to get scared of diabetes or any other disease. It's what got me into working out. But then I started to work out for the purposes of getting fit. My first goal was "I want to climb a flight of stairs without being winded". Once I achieved that, it became primarily about just getting into a routine and having fun doing it.

How about you guys?

I work out to get in shape. If I stop working out my arms lose definition and I go back to being the fat lard that I am. I'm in a decent weight lifting shape but can't do cardio for shit. So now I ride 8miles a day on a bike in sweats, trying to get into a better shape.

I work out so thaT I can one day wear no shirt and not be ashamed of myself.

it's a great stress reliever for me, plus it gives me time to think out side the house.
there's usually some people at the gym that I go to that I know.
it's always a relaxing time for me.

To lose weight and look better. My two best friends are obese, and I don't want to end up like that. Right now I'm slightly over weight at 6'6" with 225 pounds while both are a few inches shorter than I and they're close to the 300 pound mark.

I usually lift the weights I have, and go up and down the stars 40 times when its raining or winter, and I bike a few miles every day otherwise.

Junior and senior year of high school I was in the best shape of my life. I needed and outlet for my stress, I had ended up in the hospital a couple months before for asthma and had to stay there for a week, and finally the most important one was soccer. I got to the point where i could run 5 miles no problem, wind sprints where a breeze and i could bench my weight multiple times.

Then i started smoking and stopped exercising and stopped landscaping. I've lost 15 pounds of muscle and feel like i have no motivation. Ugh, i want motivation back but recently i've gotten to the point where i'm apathetic about everything and just wanna put it all off.

I've been running every other day for the past couple of weeks and eating better. I started because I looked in the mirror and realize I didn't want to look that way anymore. I weighed myself yesterday for the first time and I lost 17 pounds so far.

I already feel so much more confident, and have a much better picture of myself. I love the natural high I get after I run, and I want to keep this up.

In case anyone wants to know, I started at 265, I'm down to 248, and I run 3 miles in just under 26min.

Reason #1 is to lose weight. I've been fat my entire life and I'm fed up with it.

Reason #2 is because I'm looking to break into professional wrestling, and you can't exactly do it in the condition I'm in now.

Start grinding Hindu squats (Bethaks) and run every day.
Try the Couch to 5k runner's plan. It'll get you off the couch and work you up to doing a 5K in only 9 Weeks. Also, work on your flexibility, as it will decrease risk of injury and increase your overall agility. Pavel Tsatsouline has the best advice about flexibility and has a routine available called Super Joints, which given what often happens to wrestlers as they age, wouldn't be a bad idea to start doing.

I don't anymore, but when I did it was to gain weight and look better. Didn't work.

Other: Bodybuilding.

Right now I am cutting to decrease my body fat to 20% before going into hypertrophy again. Strict regime to be 500 calories below maintenance, with the aim of losing 1 lb of fat per week.

I don't really work out. I walk anywhere from 3-5 KM a day, and I play soccer, (when in-season), but that's it.

I've gone jogging a few times, but without some sort of goal--like, "get the ball"--I just can't stay with it. I get bored.

As for lifting weights...why? I don't need extra upper body strength. I might start if I ever start playing baseball, but even then...I can already throw 80+ MPH, so...I dunno.

Gah, I want to, but I'm sooo lazyyy... why exercise when you can sleep all day.
This. I'm not overweight, and I look decent enough; I can't really motivate myself to exercise really.

I work out to be in better shape to be more effective in Martial Arts. But I do it also because it's a lot of fun and great for releasing stress. Looking better is a bonus that I'm more than happy to receive as well, sooo...

it's other reason + better shape + fun + looking better. What the hell do I pick now? :D

My workout consists of pull-ups, push-ups, squats and crunches every other day.
