So Deus Ex: Human Revolution is coming and the coming of it has sparked a debate between me and my friends, a debate about the crux of the games story, Augmentations.
Now we are currently judging [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/3755-Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Purity-First"] off this trailer[/a].
Now this is obviously anti-aug propaganda but it seems to tell us most about the augmentations until the game arrives, in this debate though I remain neutral but I want to hear your stance.
EDIT: Thread ate my poll :(

That bit about the addictive immuno-suppresants really got to me. I mean, at face value it seems like a convinient....well, Deus-ex Machina to make the corporations look eeeeviiilll.

But think about it for even a second.....and you realize that it's absolutely what corporations would do. They probably wouldn't even tell you that the simple supplement pills you're buying from them are addictive. They probably would just leave that in small print in the EULA. You know the thing NO-ONE EVER READS!

Hell, I could see Sarif selling their augs for dirt cheap, then raking in the dough from Royalty deals with pharmaceutical companies. That way people go "What? A robo-arm for $500? YES PLEASE!!!" They die 20 years later, in a dumpster, having spent 20 million dollars on the drug until he/she literally has not but a penny to their name.

It's technically not even evil. It's just......good business.

Now, normally I'm all for human augmentation. (What exactly do you thing Google is, after all?)
But that is clearly the product of a sinister company with ulterior motives.

I would love to be able to splice my DNA to gain Mantis Shrimp eyes and the tail of a spider monkey, but seeing as that will never happen I'll take some cybernetics.

I'll probably run in autistic mode all the time to keep others from hacking my eyes, but I don't need instant wifi in my head.

As with all technology, it provides benefits with risks or drawbacks.
Apart from that, augment yourself all you want; just be prepared for potential consequences (expected or otherwise).

I'd wait for the nano augs in the original Deus Ex, less messy than getting a robotic arm grafted to me. Once that technology is out then its hello cloaking and super strength augs.

Its gonna take some convincing
Sorry, no dice.
Okay, I'll admit, you've got my attention.
I will fund you! Prepare to get an envelope filled with all my money!
(I know Crimrose's is more of a mech-suit but it was a convincing enough)

Depends .. Do the black market augs function the same way? you constantly need to inject yourself with some chems Wesker style or you'll get aug gangrene

If the illegal ones are indipendant and will possibly outlast you then HELL YEAH!!! mod me up!! ... if not then FUUUUHUUUUCK THAT!

Normally I'm all for cool mechanical developments that help humanity but... At what point are we selling our humanity for, well, inhumanity? Its clear that the company is evil because its a video game, that's what they do. It does smack of so much unadulterated truth its hard to look past, so I'd have to say, no. I could understand if the drugs weren't hyper-addictive and if they were cheaper and ONLY sold them to people with disabilities. Imagine a world were private corporations had a better fighting force then the military because of HA's. Scary thought, and the faux-documentary style of the trailer really hits deep.

Also the game looks awesome, a must buy in my book.

I'm with the first few replies here. I was in favor of upgrading a limb or two, but given the fact that I would then be addicted to an immuno-suppressant from then on out, I think not. Honestly, giving up anything that makes me who I am isn't worth it, And having to take expensive drugs when it's avoidable qualifies.

Not to mention the idea of my brain getting hacked, even if that one's just a rurmor, it would be enough to make me steer clear.

If augmentations were a thing and I could afford them, I'd upgrade myself as far as I could. This weak human flesh annoys me.

I think it is a good idea, human augmentation, the only way we can really evolve and progress is if we start taking away the limits of a human body. Now the best way to do this, in a Deus Ex situation, would to make the drug free, but regulate it by giving people alloted amounts to use a day and whatnot. I think a theme for the game would be the monopolization of a market and being able to set prices to a point of making them so high that no one would be able to keep their modifications and whatnot.... Really this brings up themes from Repo Men and Repo! The Genetic Opera, where everyone could get modifications, but the price of them mean that if you were late on a payment, the repossession people would come and rip it out of you.

So really, I am all for it, but in this situation, I think it would be better if the resistance, instead of fighting the company, bought the drug itself and synthesized their own drug, maybe make it less addictive, because you know that the company probably gives a non-addictive version of the drug to its higher-ups. That might actually be a part of the game, where you have to help make the drug for the resistance. And it's a good way to get people on your side, and after that you can overthrow the company and do what you want with its assets.

This is like a discussion in a ethics class I sat in on in College. The proffesor asked why there wasnt a cure for cancer or aids, just long and painful treatments drugs that help manage it. There is no money in cures. Infact, this actually reminds me of the main plot behind the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. God... I need to watch the show again...

It would be cool until you are hopelessly addicted to incredibly expensive necessary drugs, are forced out onto the street losing all of your possessions, start bleeding out your eyes and end up being trampled to death by riot police. But it would be kinda cool at first, so i'm all for it. (My plan would be to install robot everything, basically a robot with a human brain or hard drive copy of a human brain. No augmentation rejections for me!)
