It ruins decent games because people expect too much of it. Just look at Spore.
Had it for about two days before uninstalling it. Good thing I never actually bought it. Would have been a real waste of money.

IF It lives up to it all, a lot of hype makes it better, because it's pretty rare (and great) when a game lives up to expectations. However, if the game does not live up to it, even just a little hype is a bad thing.

If the hype they wanna create around it is delivered well, it can do wonders for the starting sales, but makes the chance the game will disappoint the players higher, this will result in a lot of bad reviews from those who fell for the hype, even if the game on itself isn't that bad.

Hype is an awful thing, it just makes people expect too much from a game. Then when the game comes out, people are disappointed that it's not the second coming of jesus.

For example i won't be buying Cod MW 2. Sure it will be awesome(pff, right) and I've had some fun with the first game but... meh
