I'm one of those few people who's opinions are unavoidibly affected by the general atmosphere surrounding me. So I'd say yes actually, hype certainly does have some effect on me.

Hype if utilized in the correct way can help a good game reach god-status or make a potentially good game i.e fable II, be completely crushed under waves of mediocrity
So wheres the hat?

As mentioned, the Fable games are perfect examples of games ruined by hype. I picked both of them not expecting much and enjoyed them.

Too much hype leads to disappointment, that's why I usually try (and fail) to ignore the hype surrounding a game.

Now, can I get my hat?

Hype turned Halo 3 into the Xbox's shiney golden god game - just a shame that made it spectatularly dissapointing.
It was a fine game, fine as in run of the mill. The single player was okay, and the multiplayer was great fun, but it doesn't deserve the massive hype it recieved.

Depends on the game. If the game can live up to its hype then yes, it can help it.

Wheres mah hat?

If the game is good (Scribblenauts) then yes, the hype helps. If it's no good (Fable 2) then all that hype is just a waste of time/Lionhead paying off the reviewers... In my opinion of course.

Hype causes disappointment when a game is released. You expect so much more than what you get, which is entirely due to the developers freakin' out over their own game.

Fable 2 was ruined for me by hype. Luckily, i missed the hype of the first so it remains one of my favourite games.

If hype matches up to the game, see Scribblenauts, it can just be good advertisement that makes you wanna buy a game that turns out awesome.

If it does not, see Spore, people will hate you for making the game seem divine and having it turn out to be complete BULL'S SHIT. Also, it may make the game seem bad when you compare it to the actual game.

And with demos, you gotta show less of the great part and more of what people may not like, see Mirror's Edge or gold dust on someone's poop.

This is what happened with me and Spore. All I saw was a light summary about all the stages, so all I saw was what I got. So, I really liked Spore.

Hype is vital to the marketing of a game. Games released with little to no fanfare -- even good games -- tend to suffer from a very low sales count.

People aren't likely to buy something if they don't even know it's coming out. That's basic logic.

Hmm... the free hat sign reminds me of South Park...

But on topic, I think it does good to a game, usually quite a lot of people buy games which are hyped but quite mediocre.

Too True.

I'm too jaded to believe hype now. I went out the day FFXII came out, bought it home and put it on ... Alas, I had been fooled. Curses.

As I said, you can't show just the gold part in a demo. There isn't only gold in a gold-mine, there's tons of just bland rock. So show a little rock, show the good and the bad, you'll sell less but get less hate, meaning more will be convinced to buy it, meaning you'll make the same amount of money with the bonus of popularity.

Unfortunately I killed that with too much hype and character creating before it even came out. I've been thinking of going back to it lately though so with lowered expectations i might enjoy it a little more.
