In fact, I don't really see servicepeople as anything other than hired thugs trained to kill at the command of the government. That's what any military is, including that of the United States, my home country.

Can you put an option in that you see servicepeople as just the same as every other person?

Also, you do need somebody to protect your country from outside threats. Pacifism is nice, but it only works if everybody puts their guns down, and that's not likely to happen.

I treat militairy men differently when their in uniform, especially when their in function. I live in the netherlands, if the militairy is mobilized somewhere in my neighbourhood I expect them to be there for a good reason. Theres also the fact in the back of my head that these people are trained to kill. Wich is something that deserves respect in my opinion. And im not talking about just knowing how to fire a gun, any birdbrain knows that bullets and sharp ends go in the bad guy.

War is bad. Military is bad.

But we need military, like it or not. Blame the government, not the poor sods who get killed so we can live in peace.

yeah i'd want this option :p

im against war, lots of people are, but you cant get every single country in the world to agree to stop war, there's a chance someone will see an opportunity for victory then and it'd just start from scratch XD
i think they're brave sure, but heroes? not really

Not everyone in the military is a soldier, one example is medics. Are they thugs? And military is as much about protecting people as killing. Sometimes it goes bad, but I'm pretty happy having something than nothing at all.

Aside from the fact that a decent military is needed for any country who wants to have any sort of power, I believe that war is sometimes needed. Something which you seem to be staunchly against.

Heehee..Indoctrination is sad.

You should have included some more options. I respect peacekeepers, but even that can be morally dubious.Overall, though..

Any nationalistic feeling is stupid.

Okay. What are our brave, courageous men in uniform defending me from right now?

We've had two heavily publicized conflicts in my lifetime; the Gulf War and the Second Gulf War. Neither one had any justification whatsoever. So what am I being protected from?

This.

We would all like to solve the worlds problems just by talking about it but the sad truth is that talking will only get you so far, after that you're going to have to pick up a shotgun, wave it in the face of the free world and say 'submit or die'.

It's not nice and we'd all rather avoid it but sometimes it's a nessercary evil.

I like my ability to live a free and peaceful life. Unfortunately, that means people like me rely on our nation's military to keep us safe from the big, bad outside world. I don't like the idea of people dying over an arbitrary plot of land, based on the circumstances of where they happened to be born, but I recognize that I rely on it - or at least the threat of it.

"If you want peace you have to be prepared for war."

But does that mean I respect and admire them? I'm not sure.

Probably, every other country on Earth. The only reason the U.S. hasen't been attacked from all sides is probably because we have a military.

Some soldiers are heroes.
Some heroes are soldiers.
Not all soldiers are heroes.
Not all heroes are soldiers.

I also would like an option for "soldiers are ordinary people" on the poll.
Given that the military takes orders from politicians, and most politicians are temporary suits who exploit their office for maximum financial gain, I'd think heroic soldiers exist in spite of their occupation, not because of it.

You may disagree with the war, but the soldiers' motivations remain the same - defend their country's people. Maybe they aren't doing what you like, but their hearts are in the right place

Really? I feel like our military is a pretty big part of WHY the rest of the world would love to see our country burn to the ground. Bit of a catch-22, huh? We apparently need the military to keep everyone else from killing us and yet the military is one of the many reasons they hate us anyway.
