I watched Serenity recently and it was okay. Haven't seen Firefly. Might pick it up if I can get it cheap.

I can see why people like it so much, but I'm not into it that much.

It's smart, well writen, it has good actors, great dialogue and it's set in SPACE!!

What more could you posibly want?

EDIT: A nice quote to prove my point ^^.

[Mal refuses to kill the prone, humiliated Atherton.]
Sir Warrick: You have to finish it, lad. [Mal doesn't move] You have to finish it. For a man to lay beaten, yet breathing? It makes him a coward.
Inara: It's humiliation.
Mal: It would be humiliating, having to lie there while the better man refuses to spill your blood. Mercy is the mark of a great man.
[He lightly stabs Atherton.]
Mal: Guess I'm just a good man.
[He repeats the poking.]
Mal: Well, I'm all right.

Ok before we go any further...this is an opinion poll and opinion post.

What I'm tying to get at is that Firefly seems to have a universal worship among gamer and geek culture...however I have always felt a bit left of center for 'not' liking the show.

I wanted to know if anyone else felt that way.
Yes. I did not hate the show, I personally just could not figure out where all the love and support for the show came from cause the show I saw, in my personal estimation just wasnt that good.

Not saying that the show was poorly made or poorly conceived, just I personally could not see how it was deserving of its hype.

I also have a running theory that ive yet to test. It seems like people who like Firefly based only on anectdotal evidence thus far, are the same people who prefer Star Wars over Star Trek. Maybe Im wrong, but it seems like a high probability.

I didn't really like it back when it was on TV. Partly because they aired it out of order so it was confusing and the character development was weird. But after years I went back and watched the whole series in order, and I was much more impressed. This was without a bunch of people telling me it was great, so I don't think group think influenced my opinion. It was probably just a combination of what I liked at the time and watching it on DVD as opposed to on TV.

Serenity is much better after Firefly, once you get to know the characters and understand the universe a little better.

I liked it and Serenity, I just felt it was something different compaired to other Science Fiction programs at the time, however I am happy it ended when it did as there was not much you could do with the setting of the show and it was nice to see it end before it got stupid.

But it's Chinese coyboys. IN SPACE!

That said, I liked how they handled combat, what with people not dying from any old bullet wound. And it was cool that everyone had kind of their own backstory, and you slowly learned about them as the series went on.

I love the show, but I understand people who don't like it, as Joss Whedon's work is a very love it or hate it thing.

off-topic, your poll is a little biased...

Ask most convention goers and gamers what Firefly is and you'll get a gushing response about "The best show on TV that ended too soon."

The show has an almost religious following among some, and nearly anyone you meet will fill your ears with praise, and mourning for it's cancellation.

Everyone but me.

I hated that show.

...and I've gotten some very very shocked, and nearly vile reactions from people for saying so.

I watched three episodes and turned it off. I just didn't see how it got such a cult following.Sure the premise was kinda neat...but personally I wanted to punch the main guy (I forget his name) in the face. He just didn't jive with me....hell most of it didn't jive with me.

I don't see where all the worship comes from.

Am I some kinda weird alien brain freak for not liking, 'the best show ever'?
That's fair enough. I love the show.
There's a poll option missing btw.

2) Unique premise - no intergalactic war etc.
Unique premise? Perhaps not as cliched as most sci-fi space waffle around, but doesn't it get called the modern US version of Blake's 7? (Not the modern US-Australian co-production version of Blake's 7, that'd be Farscape.)

Well Joss Whedon has a very polarizing effect on people, and that's because he doesn't cater to anyone when he creates his stories. I love Firefly, but couldn't stand Buffy or Angel.
Same here. I really tried to like Dollhouse, it did have some great moments, but I wasn't terribly disappointed when it died.

I tried to go back to the beginning to watch it again and found I couldn't, whereas with Firefly I've watched the whole thing several times.

I mean its not Arrested Development or Dead Like Me, but it is a unique show that draws in viewers who normally would be antsy and annoyed by the way most series cater to the lowest denominator. Though it could be better in a few ways, it has a good script with an intriguing plot that adds just enough laughs. Western Space Opera is a bold fusion and I think the creators should be respected for trying something different that didn't turn out laughably terrible.

I'm not a fan either, but not to the extent that I would make a thread about it. I hate these threads. Yet here I am, commenting.

I didn't like the main person, and I'm not too fond of cowboys. And putting cowboys in space doesn't make me like it any better actually.

I have to say that your poll responses are too narrow for it to be effective. There is no 'That's fine, I don't care' response.

And that's exactly what I would have chosen.

Whilst, as a level-headed individual, I accept that everyone has opinions and has the right to disagree with the general concensus, the fanboy in me insists that we set fire to you.

y'know, just on priciple more than anything else

What I'm doing is trying to delve into 'why' it has such a religious appeal to some. I did state this is an opinion poll and post...this is just me throwing it out there, and seeing what replies I get.

Also in real life I've gotten some pretty extreme reactions from people for mentioning that I didn't like the show. Everything from loud gasps, one guy telling me something very full of swear words to my face, and some very dirty looks with 'dude what the hell is wrong with you!'

That's what's spurred this post and poll.

You think those reactions are bad? Try telling them you don't like The Beatles. People just get crazy about things they like, is all.
