Most of the time yes I do.

The only time I really don't use consistently good grammar and spelling is when I'm playing Battlefield 3 or TF2 and need to quickly let my team know about a tank or something with the chat. (In which case I might say something like 'Tank @ C'

The internet is changing the English language; 'there' is moving towards one spelling (discarding 'their', etc)

On the technical forums that I answer questions, we 'old timers' do not respond to questions in 'leet speek'.

So saving a few key strokes may stop you getting the right answers.

B-O-U-N-D, people.
That actually shows the person trying to apply the rules of grammar; that adding 'ed' changes the verb to a past tense.

It is only because the English language has so many exceptions that they are incorrect.

Yes, I attempt to use correct grammar and spelling whilst on the internet. There was a brief period in my life wer i typd lik ths. That was when I was 10. Nowadays, I use correct grammar and spelling while on the internet while being a minor grammar Nazi at times.

While that is true, for somebody who speaks only English,

...they are incorrect.
is enough for me. If somebody is multilingual, let it slide. But really, keeping track of one language is not hard, English or otherwise.

Seriously, who came up with the idea that spelling and grammar doesn't apply to the internet? Nobody's gonna understand what you're* saying if you don't. I had no idea what the title said besides "mild rant".
Corrected :D (Just playing)

Seriously though, I do get irritated when people put no effort into spelling or grammar. Obviously a typo doesn't count, it would be insane to hold anyone to that standard (except maybe an English teacher, 'cuz that shit's funny to see!). I often see you're as your or their as there. Kinda bothers me because in my school they spent quite a lot of time teaching us the difference. I know of course that not everyone went through the same kind of deal, but still, it's not rocket science.

I do spell as well as possible, but I don't actually mind people typing like this.
So long as I can grasp what the other person is saying without the enigma machine I don't mind.

I live in a rural area and a lot of people mispronounce things, I don't correct them in real life, since they'd just assume I'm trying to be an ass, so I don't online either.

Anyone sick of this? Anyone sick of people using "2" as a substitute for "to," as well as other substitutes like "u" and "ur"? I'm not talking about web acronyms like "lol" or "brb," (I use those too) but just the people who even flat out claim that just because they're on the internet, no spelling and grammar rules apply.

Recently, I had an encounter on Team Fortress 2 with some kid who pretty much thought he was cool, and thought he was a great troll, but he couldn't spell or type anything grammatically correct to save his life, which I pointed out; which then lead him to reply with the excuse: "dis is tha internet, not scool" or something like that.

What with the internet becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, and even going into our school life; I feel like if this excuse becomes the norm, it's only just going to get worse for them, and it's downright insulting to those who don't use this as an excuse for misspellings.
I'm with you on this. I also have a funny story you might appreciate.

My best friend didn't know how to spell "Come" until his senior year of high school.
He only found out when he sent me a text message saying "Can I cum over later" and when I asked him never to spell it like that again he didn't know what I was talking about.

That means for every essay, letter and other assignment in his life he used "cum" instead of "come"

So yeah... the utter disregard people have for proper spelling on the internet is abhorrent.

I try to use proper grammar all the time. I write fast, so I don't have any problems writing longer and grammatically correct posts even in games like TF2 or DotA.

But as anyone else, I make some mistakes. I try to correct all of them, after writing a post, I read it once or twice. But English isn't my native language. To be more precise, it's my third foreign language. All in all, I think I'm doing well.

I read most posts in forums in the hope of finding something new that I didn't know. Some new uses for words, figure of speech and so on.

I know that no one is perfect and that's why I rarely judge someone based on his/her grammar. When I see some honest, repeated mistakes, I will try to correct the poster in a good manner. But I hate seeing posts where you see that the poster just doesn't care about grammar. If he can't take his time to write the post with decent grammar, then the post is obviously not worth my time.

I tend to ignore posts with intentionally bad grammar, posts with no punctuation and no defined paragraphs. I just can't read a wall of text with no spaces.

I usually make the effort to use correct spelling and such, but I'm not anal about it.
Same when it comes to reading other people's posts, I can forgive a few typos and the odd mistake as long as the general message is understandable. Grammar Nazis annoy the living fuck out of me.

Considering people usually get pissed when I don't use the correct form of "your" I gotta say no I don't care. I can also safely say I will invite those people to fuck right off. If you get the point of what the person is saying then don't complain.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if people don't spell properly. I try to, but I taught myself to a long time ago, and it just stuck. It's harder for me not to use punctuation now.

What I've found is that some people (typically in online games such as DotA or LoL) will insult me for spelling properly. THAT pisses me off. It doesn't happen often, but when one person gets on my case about it, everyone follows suit. That shit needs to stop. And keep in mind, I'm not correcting them, or getting on their cases for spelling like fucking idiots in any way at all; they are the instigators every time.

I'm not to heavy on the grammar or spelling people use when I chat with them on MSN. My problem is when it's no longer coherent. Though, I do expect it more from an article, or something that's a job, rather then someone commenting.

Oh look...another of these threads....

Yes it irritates the hell out of me when people use the excuse of "I don't have to spell, I'm on the internet" unfortunately just because it bothers me doesn't mean people are going to stop. In fact, it will encourage some to keep doing it just to bother me. That is sadly, the nature of people. Especially people on the internet. I use proper spelling and grammar almost always. Sometimes I get slight dyslexia and I think something is spelled right initially and when I do spell checks but then look at it later and it is in fact spelled incorrectly. Yes, I will change it but unfortunately there is no way that I've found to prevent this from happening. I can let it slide a bit more for people who I know are from a non-english speaking country to where English(whether it is the bastardised American English or proper English) is their second language, but to people who it is their native language (and most of the time primary language) I find them to be lazy arses. And for some, I pray and hope that they use that kind of spelling on resumes and job applications so that they don't get hired until they learn to spell correctly. Unfortunately for Americans, our education system sucks. Mostly because just about every budget cut(at least in California, I can't speak politics for other states) is from education. Apparently the more uneducated our children are the more our state is happy? So we wind up with over filled classrooms and not enough teachers and teachers who couldn't care less if their students learn anything and some who will let their students get away with using that kind of spelling and grammar on essays without correcting them. When I called and emailed congress the other day about reasons they should oppose SOPA and PIPA I actually threw in that they should start caring more about education and a few other issues that we have as a state and as a government first and THEN worry about the internet. People with dyslexia can also get cut some slack because I grew up with friends who have dyslexia and I know how hard it is for them. Especially since I got put in charge of proof reading EVERYTHING for them. Sucks being one of the smarter kids in the class sometimes.

Usually when people send me messages I will sit there and correct their spelling and grammar and then reply back and send their corrected message to them as well...Or my interpretation of what I think they were trying to say....For some reason people have stopped randomly sending me messages.....hmmmm

I also deleted a lot of people off of Facebook, some that I've known for 8+ years because they seemingly can't manage to use proper spelling and grammar and I got tired of seeing it on my news feed or in comments/wall posts. Hell I don't even allow people to talk to me like that in text messages. I will make an exception since text messages have a 150 character limit(if I am recalling correctly) and the text is one or two characters off from one page I can allow letter/number substitution for words since I personally find it annoying to get a text with one word on it as part of a prior text. If it is someone responding with one word that is another topic altogether since most likely my text to them involved asking them a one or two word answered question.

I think it's important to do your best to have proper grammar and spelling, no matter where you are. For whatever reason I seem to have a gift for this; but I agree, i think it's atrocious when someone thinks they can be stupid "becauze were on the internetz not scool".

However, in a more general, fair point of view:
i don't really think it should matter. People can talk however they want whenever they want. In your case of the TF2 Troll, well, that's plain obnoxious, but in chatroom environments and other places, entirely proper spelling and grammar should not really count for anything. Trolls should be smart, and yours wasn't. But that's not going to stop people who don't really care from not being idiots.

My parents were Grammar Nazis, so my spelling and grammar are generally good. Except.. well.. I've never met a comma I didn't like. I use them as I would speak, generally. If I'd pause when saying it aloud, I use a comma. I realize this is incorrect, but it's a reflection of my speech.

The "it doesn't matter because it's the internet and no one's grading me" annoys me. Mostly because, as I was told in school, "The way you practice is the way you play." If you can't be bothered to type correctly when it doesn't matter, you often won't think twice about typing things incorrectly when it does matter. I give allowances for typos and even for poor spelling.. mostly because I've come to believe that spelling is a more or less inherited trait in some ways - meaning, I've known people (like my sister) who've never been able to spell worth a damn from the time they were young and people (like me) who have never had a problem spelling much of anything.

My biggest problems are then/than, your/you're, to/too and there/their/they're. Yes, I realize one of those isn't a "complete set," but these are the actual mistakes I see most often. There are easy to remember rules to follow to make sure you're using the right one(s).

As for "teh," I only use it for comic effect and self-deprecation.
