Assuming this story is true, you should most certainly NOT tell your girlfriend the truth. By all means break things off with her, break her heart if need be, but there's no need to make her hate her mother.
Just tell her that you and her want different things out of your relationship - which is true enough - and go your separate ways. You could even keep in touch with the mother if you want, up to you.

lol...this thread is still going on? So OP what happened, did you end up telling her about her mother?
It does technically add up. It's 1 hour total travel time plus shopping time. If they had an elderly person with them, it could have taken up to an hour to get around the shopping centre, especially if the items they needed weren't all in one place.
