Alright. Fine. As long as you acknowledge that it has its high points. I'm not saying Metric's evil, just that its bullshit for other countries to expect the US to jump to it for them. And I'll admit, I like to use it when measuring volume under cups (miligrams and such, like in medicine).

Though I still say that saying miles is better then Kilometers. IN both distance and speed.

Thus ends this thread. I really don't get this British hostility towards our (read: the awesome) way of measurement, but it is all over these forums. We will drive on the right side, measure our progress in miles, and fill up our gas tanks in gallons. We watch TV, not telly, and only put one 'i' in 'aluminum'. You know why? Because we want to do it that way. Why can't you leave our national differences alone? All the important stuff (science, architecture, military) is universally measured by the metric system, anyway.

Until you add a "screw you, there's nothing 'superior' about a given system of measurement", I'm not voting.

More America bashing nice. You realize it's used by people here because the schools teach it because it's the federal governments standard.

So we use it because we're forced to learn it.

I do think metric is far better though since everything is in 10's instead of crap but c'mon it's not because we're ALL stupid.

why not just phase it in like i think you already are. but with a more detailed plan. like start teaching all new student so like year 1 metric system and continue this up through the years so in 10 to 12 years you have every year in the schools learning metric and going out into the real world.

Yes, we should spend the billions necessary to re label all objects to follow the metric system.

*slaps forehead*
billions i think not. just add metric alongside imperial like they do over in the uk, label one side of a foot long ruler in inches, and the other in centimeters/millimeters, turn it around when necessary.

I think most speed gauges are in both systems in cars so very little needs to be done there all people need to know is a mile is 1 and 3/5ths of a km so a 20 mile journey works out at 32km.

all food in the usa is required to be labeled in metric and imperial, so there's no problem there, besides the measurements all that's needed there is, again a second scale or a label on set amounts ie a us tablespoon is ~15ml. a fl oz. is ~30 (29.6)ml. a gallon ~3.8l or for simplicities sake 4l. an ounce is ~30g (28.35g). etc

i think all people need to know to change is a real world grounding in what constitutes each measurement ie the knowledge that a manhattan city block is 80m by 270m, that a m is 1/10th longer than a yard. stuff like that

Mate, I'm not saying Americans are stupid! Not at all. I'm sure I could come up with a few idiot Americans to try to defend the indefencible, only to get ninja'd by many, many examples to the contrary. (infact, my grandpa was American)

My point is it's really only the U.S.A. that insists on continued use of the imperial system in fields such as mechanics and engineering. Which is neither helpful to Americans nor the rest of the world.

I do enjoy the metric system, with the exception of temperature. I don't care how well it matches up, I will never feel right saying that the temperature is a comfortable 27 degrees outside.

If you disagree you clearly hate freedom and are a communist, socialist, or some evil combination of the two.
this.

also, your options are all either: your right, or your mostly right, or your right but im stupid, or lets go back to a very old form of measurement. so you suck.

I wouldn't feel right saying that either, because 27 degrees celsius is uncomfortably hot. Maybe I just think that because I live in Canada. My preferred temperature is probably around 10-20 degrees celsius. I have no idea what that is in fahrenheit.

OT: Yeah, metric's awesome. Isn't America the only country in the world that uses Imperial?

thats rather odd i feel exactly the same about fahrenheit hahaha. everytime i see 60 degrees on a thermometer i think its broken or i am one or the other hahaha

If the metric system were truly better than America would use it.
America is the best country on earth, therefore everything we do is the right choice.

I wasn't referring to you, there's a few posts I read though.

Either way I'm not offended(hard to do that), "standard" is just dumb and anyone who defends it just hasn't looked into how metric works enough. Everything is made to be easy and in 10's, easy is good. But no standard is better because it's by ...well depends on what you're looking at! Isn't complexity fun?

I'm an engineer. Imperial measurement is crap. It's nowhere near as useful as a simple base 10 numeric system.

'Pass me an 11/15ths socket please...?'

Come to think of it, it's not just distance. Weight also. Grams. So simple. It translates well through from tiny amounts to colossal masses.

Measure temperatures in centigrade. It's so much more practical! 0 deg C, is freezing, 100 deg C is boiling (water @ 1 ATM) If you don't like that, then at least use kelvin.

Surely the American scientific community use metric? Why can't the rest of America just get on board with the rest of the world?

In short, imperial sucks. Let it die.

Edit: there you go spell, nazis... happy? I've fixed the odd mistake and typo. BTW C.o.l.o.u.r. :p

P.S. I have no problem with the conversational use of imperial units. It's where, I believe we need a standard, global system for engineering and science.
Did you know there metric time?. 10 hours in a day. 100 minutes to an hour. 100 seconds to a minute off the top of my head. I don't use it but I have a watch for the sheer novelty of it.

I would agree that metric has to be a simpler standard to use, but I've already learned the imperial system so fuck learning everything again in metric. I'll stick with imperial for the time being!

How about you simply let other countries use whatever system of measure they want to?
theres a reason why that logic while sound in theory is flawed. conversion between measurements introduces inaccuracies into the measurement itself resulting in a lack of precision. think of it like using google translate to translate this sentence in to german and then back again. (Fyi you get this: "Think of it as with Google Translate to translate this sentence in German and then back again.") this is hell for anyone having to use them daily.

tldr; the push for total usage of the Si system is as noble as the push for a unifying human language, but much much easier to implement. if everyone uses the same system everyone knows exactly what they purchase / distance crossed/

edit: made first sentence make relative sense
