Ahh yes, this wonderful, absolutely bonkers show. They manage to turn the crazy up to 12, and it's glorious for it (seriously, they out-crazy the show about giant robots being powered by FIGHTING SPIRIT). I mean, seriously, what other show uses bystanders (in this case, the one-star students) as rubble and reusable collateral damage? (if you think I'm kidding, I'm really not; any fight in the school sends dozens of these poor bastards flying. They're okay.) The fight scenes are so absolutely over the top that they've achieved stable orbit (though I will admit Ryruko and Satsuki's battle bikinis took a bit of getting used to), the story is insane without being unintelligible, the characters are interesting (in the case of Nui, bloody terrifying; in the case of Mako, hilarious and surprisingly plot-relevant), and the music is top notch (I get shivers every time the "Don't Lose Your Way" horn flare plays). Even the sudden plot twist actually caught me by surprise (I'm not going to spoil what it is, other than there is one). I won't deny that the show won't be for everybody, but I love it.
My favorite character would have to be Ira Gamagori. Between his size-changing antics (dude is already friggin' huge, but at one point he's big enough to grab the sides of a death-match tower like an end table; he's as much a part of the scenery as he is a character), his sense of honor and duty (which can get literally masochistic...), and how flustered he gets when interacting with a goofball like Mako, he's a riot to watch (and serious props to the voice actors who play him, since the majority of his lines are -shouted at the top of his lungs-).
And, well...this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xjx6Az4LTno That laugh-while-plummeting is comedy gold.
