I bloody love branston. Cheddar and ham sandwich with some branston and a little bit of hendersons relish and I'm in heaven. Even better with a nice mug of yorkshire tea.

I would have to do some serious searching to find it around here. Probably in a specialty import shop.

I'd try it, given a chance, though. Couldn't be worse than Vegemite, right?

Branston pickle with cheese is bloody lovely. If you make cheese on toast, try including some.
I enjoy putting it on the bread , then whacking that cheese on top. Then your cheese on toast, becomes a Branston Pizza. And it is ruddy lovely.

I'd say somewhere between sweet and sour, but closer to sweet. It's chunkier than Heinz relish and a little sharper, which puts a lot of people off. It's OK when washed down with a cup of tea.

I live in New Jersey. I have no idea what the hell Branston Pickle is. Is it like relish or something?

*edit* Oh, it is. Sounds okay. I prefer sweet pickled peppers.

Much as I'm enjoying being about 3 stone lighter than I was previously, I must admit that one of the downsides of living the lifestyle of an impoverished student on a low carb, low fat diet is the comparative lack of cheese and bread to make the requisite cheese on toast or cheese and pickle sandwiches, both of which are incomplete without the godly tang provided by Branston pickle.

One day we shall meet again, my old friend.

I love it. I can quite easily eat a jar of it on it's own. As in jar + fork = good times.

But I guarentee, the best hangover cure by far includes Branston Pickle

Bacon (proper bacon, not american pap)
A crusty roll or baguette
Braston Pickle
Brown Sauce (HP of course)

Butter both sides up, paste the bottom piece of bread with a thick layer of Branston. It MUST be the bottom layer, for otherwise it doesn't taste as good. I have no idea why. Bacon on top of that, then a nice curling string of brown sauce on top of that and put the other piece of bread on. It's almost better than sex.

I find that American cheese is best for this. Much like beer, they have some miraculous way of making it taste absolutely dire, which helps take away some of the Branston's power. It's sort of like how being kicked in both shins is more enjoyable than being kicked in just one.

EDIT: Maybe wash it down with some Bud Light...or a Diet Irn Bru. Tasty.
Boooooo! Branston goes with a strong English Cheddar!

Be careful what you say about American cheese. Imp's from Wisconsin and might shank for implying they have bad cheese.

OT: I've never had one before, but looking it up it sounds gross. I prefer pickles hot and not sweet at all.

I still haven't had a chance to try the mythical Yahtzee pickle. There are many mixed opinions about it from what I've read however.

I found a jar at my local supermarket, and have since bought several more; I love the stuff. I have it on rice cakes or on toast with cheese as others have said. I'm actually eating some now. Mmm-Mmm!

I tried it recently at a local pub here served with a scotch egg, and I quite liked it. It does, however, seem like the kind of thing that wants to be paired with other good, sturdy, strong-tasting foods.

Being English, Branston Pickle is always in my fridge. Its great for sandwiches and salad.

When i went to the USA to meet a friend and her kids i brought Branston Pickle, Blood Pudding, Brown Sauce, crumpets and Battenberg Cake. They hated all of them. Though they liked the Kinder Eggs as they were banned in USA - and German. Guess they liked German goods and not English goods.

Come on, who wouldnt love chocolate with a toy surprise. :)
As a Canadian I certainly grew up with HP sauce (although weirdly ours tastes rather different than the UK's...), and while I love it I can see how someone might not care for it or Branston pickle. Blood pudding I would just assume to be out of the question for most American taste buds.

But how the hell could they not like Battenberg!? Am I wrong? Do Americans not love ungodly sweet things?

I think ze Battenberg is also German ya? (although thoroughly accepted in Britain due to Queen Victoria, and house Mountbatten...) It is indeed ungodly in it's marzipan sweetness, but a damn fine cake nonetheless.

Branston Pickle is, and always will be, a condiment. You're not supposed to eat it on it's own...

It's not a food base. For example, a cheese AND pickle sandwich, cheese AND pickle on toast.

It is designed, destined and desired as an accompaniment, an addition or complimentary flavour to the main event.

Very useful at Christmas too, have you got Turkey? Have you got white bread? Stick some Branston in there! It's really just a standardised chutney with ideas above it's station. Nice tho :)
