I lost interest in the game when 90 percent of your deck was considered wasted cards, all that matters is getting to your Chaos Emperor Dragon or Dark armed and the games only last 2 or 3 turns/

The art style has changed, too. It looks kind of lazy, more like stills from the anime than actual illustrations.

The extra deck
What the fuck is an extra deck?

Back in my day, we only had one deck. And, I guess, the fusion deck. But it really more of a pile.
The extra deck is the new name for the fusion deck, since now it can also contain Synchro monsters and XYZ monsters. I had been out of the loop for awhile and I had no idea what was going on when a guy I was playing started pulling out these silver cards from his "Fusion" deck.
That first card feels so overpowered. Like, it sets itself up to essentially be infinite.

This game is totally borked now, huh?

So wait, you mean to tell me that Blue eyes white dragon is no longer the best card you can play! What the hell happened?
Of course not! Geez, that's old news.

It's all about Exodia now.

Well it's not that overpowered. It can only negate effects that destroys cards, and if you use it you are vulnerable for the rest of the turn. Plus it's still susceptible to simple attacks and effects that don't destroy it.

Don't take that the wrong way, the game is definitely borked. This is just not a good example of how ridiculous some of the effects have become.

So do I. I loved the anime and the card game so much as a kid. I'm so out of the loop, though, I don't even have a clue of what Synchro Whatsits or XYZ Hooha is.

Actually, I think I still have a Yu-Gi-Oh GBA game, and I just found the disc to my Gamecube's Gameboy player. I think I'm going to go play it.

I actually really enjoy all the new cards add a nice layer of strategy to the game. Yes it's more complicated than before, but I don't think that is a bad thing

I still have a World Tournament 2005 Gameboy cartridge which I play sometimes so the game isn't totally obsolete to me. However, although I never did like the Synchros and whatnot I could tolerate it. What pisses me off now is how you can only have a high-tier deck if it's based on some archetype.

I feel like everyone saying the game is suffering from power creep or is borked have no clue what they're talking about. Monsters, aside from a few of the over-powered ones that spawned from the show(Thousand Eyes Restrict), were ridiculously under-powered and a good chunk of the spell cards were ridiculously over-powered. Burn decks comprised entirely of spell cards used to be some of the most reliable ways to win. The game has changed, but in ways that make for a more balanced game. Older non-effect monsters are pretty useless now, but compared to spells and traps they were anyway.

Now, if you want to talk about how stupid the anime has become, no argument there.

i guess?

last time i cared about yugiho was the GBA game Eternal Duelists Soul, which was before they started making the games stupidly easy. sure my deck in EDS was pretty much god tier for that game but i had to fucking work for it. i mean i could field TWO Blue Eyes Ultimates, first turn, assuming the draw lined up for me (rarely did, but a first turn BEU wasn't uncommon)

also, Princess Luna is the best pony :p

Yu-gi-oh ended when Yugi's story was done in the series. I mean, for crying out loud it was called YU-GI-OH!

It's weird, the show didn't have any baring on me and my buds playing the card game, yet that was still around the exact time we all lost interest. Maybe it's because seeing them try and 'milk' the series afterwords became visible in the card game to, with all that retarded biker and hero stuff.

This was also the time that stores (like Wal-Mart) started "hiding" their displays for the cards in really awkward parts of the store... coincidentally enough. Out of sight, out of mind, ya know? I am kind of glad they did because that broke my addiction of buying random packs every time I would go shopping.

yu gi oh was always about bringing out the big guns as fast as you can
even before xyz there where the neos and gladiator fusions that where quite fast if played right
while i still think the game holds up strong i can see the consern with older cards now being too slow to be worth there effects.
maby konami needs to reconisder how the older stratergies are intergrated into the game

I liked the old days when you had beat sticks and low power effect monsters. Now you have cards that hit for 4k and can take 5k punishment which have effects that field bomb your opponent. Yu gi oh used to be balanced. It got kinda shit after 5Ds. I could at least understand the point of having synchro monsters.
Pretty much this, I rolled a D.D Deck, until XYZ made them practically obsolete and it all came down to a game of "Who has the bigger deathkillMcsmashrobotthing"
I preferred when you had to think, rather than playing a set guideline.

I'm butthurt since I'm been playing since it started and I'm still shit because I don't like keeping up with the meta and tournaments, so that means any deck I make, even a theme one, is no match for anyone.

For those that are complaining, as someone who has been playing Yugioh for a decade, I gotta say you guys are stupid.

If you think I don't know what I'm talking about, let's look at my nine decks and one I used to use.

A Crystal Beast Deck with no extra deck and a good winning streak.

A Cloundian deck with no extra deck and great defense.

A Venom Deck with no extra deck that wins 9/10 duels, and none of them involved the instant win effect.

A Destiny Board deck with no extra deck that, while not as good, is functional.

A Neos Wiseman deck with one fusion card for Prisma's effect that is... okay.

A deck based on the old "Rise of the Dragon Lords" structure deck that, while having 1 Fusion and 1 XYZ monster, rarely uses them and can still kick some ass.

A Skull Servant deck that, while having 2 Rank 1 XYZ monsters, rarely uses them and is fairly decent.

An Alien Deck and a Madolche deck that... admittedly don't help my arguement.

And finally, a Darkworld deck based of that of the guy who taught me how to play in the first place. No extra deck and, while formulaic, always won.

In conclusion, if you want to play like in the old days, PLAY LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS! It hasn't stopped me. Why should it stop you?

I don't mind the concept of synchos of xyzs. It's just that they made it too damn easy to summon them. Most tuners had effects that let you either special summon them or bring out the monster you needed for material in the same turn. And there were too many cards that thinned the deck and let you draw too fast so that they could get exactly what they needed, barring some terrible luck on both the first hand and every subsequent draw.

If you were facing a Six Samurai deck or an Exodia deck and they went first, you might as well just quit.

There are plenty of viable non-extra focused decks. I'm having fun on DN with a deck revolving around the card Summoner of Illusion. It's just that the game moves far too quickly (and yet agonizingly slow if you aren't the one whose turn it is...) at this point. The latest ban list has done a decent enough job trying to slow things down, so there aren't quite as many "summon a field full of monsters on the first turn" decks, but it's a systemic problem at this point. Your archtype needs to be able to completely swarm the field, or it's just not viable.

Honestly, my best suggestion would just be using Throwback Format when playing. The format removes the use of Synchro and Exceed (because fuck actually using that retarded "Xyz" thing) monsters and cards the relate to them.

It's how my friends and I play all the time. Half because we think Synchro and Exceed monsters are destroying the game, and half because we all stopped playing around the same time (Just before 5Ds came out) and just recently started up again.

I confess I too am a little butthurt over this, the last deck I regularly played with was Morphtronics, which allowed me to just about stay competitive, but I soon realized that this just wasn't fun anymore, I miss the old days of high attack points actually meaning something as opposed to "I summon Caius the Shadow Monarch which immediately removes your monster from play," I did that once and thought".....wow....that was unsatisfying"

in short I no longer play the card game because it just isn't fun anymore

Ehh, it was fun to play back at the start; things were simpler and it took lots of thought to build a beastly deck. Then they started banning all the good cards left and right; and started replacing them with crappier versions. Just got to be too expensive to keep up with it all. Every time they'd update the ban list my deck would end up broken so I'd have to buy more packs to shore it up with cards that weren't banned. By about 2005 or 2006 I got sick of that bullshit and stopped playing.
That's what pissed me off. Alot of the time I'd finally get my paws on a good card only for it to get banned. As soon as I get everything I need to summon Relinquish then *BAM* banned.
