Hmmm, looks like I'm leaning towards the happy ending if the characters are significantly injured enough during the climax
you kindof want the guy to almost give up and admit to the crappyness of his life but then is reminded of how much his lover means to him? no?

He kills the antagonist, gets the girl, but overdoses on cocaine because he can't stand the memory of killing the guy.

Make him kill the antagonist and get the girl, then overdose on cocaine and die! :D Its a little dark, and a little happy. Yay!

I say happy, but do it in a different way so it's not too Disney-esque.

How about main character gets love interest, kills asshole antagonist and is then pursued by police so that he and the love interest have no choice but to flee the country and live being forever hunted by the law.

Maybe that's what you were aiming for in the first place, but seriously, put more emphasis on them being hunted down and only having each other. That way, there's still happy, but there's still drama.

I see the overdose ending willing big time, but I'm not sad. We've had loads of happy endings, and dark just feels like it has more depth to it. It's possibly slightly disturbing, but it's also more original and more importantly, not as sappy.

I really don't believe you when you say you're a script writer, because you typed 'to' when you meant 'too'... twice.

There's also secret ending number three! Antagonist kills protagonist, protagonist's love interest kills antagonist, a-la V for Vendetta or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

OH NO! I made a small grammar error! I obviously can´t be teh scriptwriters. Also, i don´t think that idea is good. It´s not bad, but it doesn´t fit with the tone.

I say overdose. Happy endings are overrated for the most part. The Shank excluded.

I'm a sucker for tragic endings so I'm going to offer a third option: The protagonist dies during his showdown with the kingpin, but in a final monologue, confesses his love to the heroine, while telling her she needs to let him go down as the crooked, murdering bastard, dope fiend that he is in order to save her own career and rid her of any allegations of being an accomplice. He doesn't care that everyone knows the secrets of his second life, as long as she knows his side to it. He makes her promise to him that she'll do this for him.

The premise of the story sounds really interesting. I imagine if you began the story just before his coke addiction gets out of hand, or just after (allowing for some flashbacks), you could make a really long and deep movie of it.

Other than that, the hobo ending and the drug-induced hallucination of the happy ending sound like good mind-fuckery.

You could show the Happy Ending, but have it then reveal to be just a hallucenatory vision of the Main Character in a seedy motel room as he is starting to feel the effects of cocaine overdose.

OR have the whole film turn out to be the hallucination of a filthy hobo.
That's actually really clever. The first suggestion that is. No-one likes a dream ending.

Either go with this or have the protagonist killed off by the big bad, and then the chick kills him to avenge the protagonist.
Edit: Or have both the protagonist and the heroine die at the hands of the big bad's mafia goons, since he sounds like a real powerful kingpin.
Edit2:electric boogaloo: Have the kingpin kill the heroine, and blind with fury the protagonist charges him with an improvised sharp/pointy weapon. He manages to mortally wound the kingpin, but ends up dead himself due to gunshots. Yes yes, it's a "everyone dies" kind of ending, big whoop, wanna fight about it?

I have to say, I think it may be an idea to rewrite the endings. The happy ending feels too soppy while the overdose ending feels too sleazy and "...that's it?". I think overdose is the closest to an ending I like, but I don't like the idea of the person killing himself through a cocaine overdose in a sleazy hotel. Maybe something else like blowing his brains out or overdose on sleeping pills, just after writing a note to someone the protagonist is close to. Something to make it feel more like a tragedy and to tug on heart strings than, well, the overdose ending.

Thanks for all your opinions and ideas guys, keep em coming! =)

Edit:

Also, Don´t suggest any ending where the Kingpin doesn´t die. The whole movie pretty much builds on how the protagonist hasto find the kingpin and bring him down. Having him fail at that would just be a giant cock-slap, not tragic.

Isn't that basically the ending to the brother's bloom?
