They couldn't figure out how to use a controller without analogues and with clearly marked directional arrows and buttons... I'm having some trouble accepting they were particularly bright.
Hypothetical: You come across a three-wheeled car (and yes, they DO exist). It's a familiar shape, you know what it is, but it's just weird.

Do you a) Stare at it in amazement, or b) get in it and drive without any amazement at all.

If you answered A, then you're apparently DUMB for having never seen a CAR before.

if you answered B, get the hell out of my Reliant Robin.

What's this about a Pokémon N64? Blue with a Pickachu on it? Bloody hell, my friend has one of those! Most awesome special edition console ever, if I do say so myself.

And nah, you're not old. Gaming is just young, and you've been around for a lot of it.

To be quite honest, I'd consider myself in your leagues. Sixteen and I've been gaming since before I could form proper memories. Still have an NES and a Genesis in the basement. Shame they don't work anymore... The earliest memory of gaming I have is playing Kirby's Dreamland 2 on an airplane down to Florida when I was maybe five or six. Can't quite remember, as my memory is rubbish. I do remember my elder sister lost her Game Boy on that flight, because she wasn't smart like me and put it in baggage. I also remember being creeped out by the music in Batman Forever and the entirety of Wheel of Fortune on the Genesis. I was a timid child...

Wait. Terrible memory, recalling childhood moments and entering ramblings thereof... Good God. I am old!

c) Remark how odd/cool it is and then proceed to drive it. It's something slightly odd, it's not a life defining epiphany or a completely alien mechanism. You shouldn't be awe struck to the point you can't work the bloody thing.

The most unintuitive and poorly designed controllers I have ever held in my hands were the N64's. They are easily some of the worse controllers ever made (second only to that complete plastic aberration that had something like 32 buttons and seemed like a keyboard that had a frontal accidental with a poorly designed controller). Took me a while 5 seconds to figure it out.

One thing is being amazed by something, the other is being unable to understand how to work it. What one gathers from your description is that the kids were dumbfounded by the lack of analogues, that they couldn't really figure out what the fuck to do now.

It took me several minutes and an improvised puppet show before he was consider the signifigance of the name 'Playstation TWO'
Puppet show?

Something along the lines of showing him a peace sign, and indicating that two fingers were more than one?

EDIT: For those of you who are just taking shots at these kids for being young or willfully ignorant, know this: They were actually quite knowledgeable, and we had a long conversation about the merits of PC gaming over console/vice versa after my impromptu history lesson. These kids weren't dumb, just naive about consoles released before they were born. So lay off, okay?
It doesn't mean they're smart. They're still fucking stupid. Just because they can spout terms about console/pc gaming, doesn't mean you shouldn't have slapped them up the head. God damn I hate kids these days. Stupid brats...

At this point, the 19-year-old Radelaide goes on a ramble about how kids these days don't know anything and probably will never amount to anything...

My dad used to beat me around the head with a PS1 controller! After I've worked 32 hours a day in the ol' game shafts diggin' out gems like Golden Eye and Mario Kart 64!

Old men on park benches...No you haven't. Don't delude yourself. I remember the Odessy2 and Intelivision. Does that mean I am better than the new shit. No. Does that mean you are better based on understanding of newer shit, no.

Tech changes. The cell phones I knew of when I was a teen was the old motorola brick. In my thirties I have an Iphone.

Don't read into tech. I'm sure buy the time you are eighty and I am dead and buried, warp drive will have been invented.

You can sit on your porch, "damn kids today, they have no idea what it was like to travel slower than the speed of light."

The short is don't feel old. Especially if you are around twenty. I'm in my mid 30's, I won't believe I am no longer "connected til I reach my 50's."

After then I will retire to Las Vegas and hit all the brothels. I will hit chicks half my age. Till then I suggest you hit some chicks your age and forget aboout whether people remember anolog sticks vs. a D-pad.

Recently, I've been collecting old consoles, and I spotted a Pokemon Special edition N64 for sale at GAMETRADERS ROBINA INDOOROOPILLY, and rushed over to purchase the same.
I have that 64 still pluged in to my tv. I have had it since it was new and I love it. Thanks for making me think about it. Now excuse me as I play some mario kart...

Do you sit on park benches in your spare time and feed pigeons?

Do you have a walking stick that you use frequently?

Do you have your trousers touching your nipples?

If you have answered 2/3 of the questions with a "yes" then you're too old and must be put down

Come along, behind the shed...

I did it while pushing a car last week.

Things were worse back in my day; WELCOME TO MY DAY!

More like picking up various consoles and flailing them about wildly.
