Recently i have started only showing any serous emotion when watching anime or reading manga, stuff like the ending to toradora! or ichigo 100% making me cry, even though i just dont cry. im just one of those people, i also dont realy show any exitment in much else now. my goal in life is to live in japan because i love the culture so much. im worried to say the least, i have enough social problems with out transforming into a otaku. i live in the south of england, nerds are rare let alone anime/manga otaku. pretty much all i do in my free time is read manga. is it time to cut down or am i just over acting?

Uh, you're just over-reacting. You're going to have to embrace your otakuness or give up your hobby. I suggest the one that doesn't leave you bored.

You should probably try and find another interest as well as anime/manga.

Although I remember when watching the Sailor Moon I let a tear out and it made me so happy. I don't even know how or why but damn if she can't fight for her friends.

You should try to spread you self out more. Try reading some American or English comics, that way you feel less like an Otaku.

Well, don't call yourself an "otaku", just say "nerd".
You're speaking English, God damn it!

Besides that, animes and mangas are just like movies, tv shows and comics, you can get emotionally invested in them if they're well made.

For your own sake, I hope they're well made.

You're over reacting.

I do that all the time. Anime typically have emotional story lines. Its understandable if you only show emotion during anime or manga.

I do this all the time. Or perhaps I'm just an Otaku as well.

I get like that too. Waiting to start my new job and having nothing better to do.

try and get out more. Walk around town, go on a jog, go see a movie even if you have to go by yourself. That's about all that keeps me sane sometimes.

Er...not to seem ignorant. But...what's an Okatu O-o?
In the West, it just means someone who is interested in the Japanese culture/pop culture. In Japan, well, it depends on how you use it. There are many types of otaku, however it's usually used as an insult. Literally, it means shut-in, as in inside your house. You could be doing anything, Train models, anime, games, gardening, anything that requires you to be inside all the time.

Join me in being a complete freak in the south of England! You are (Not) Alone!
Meh, I suppose I am in about the same situation as you anyway, I just have friends who like manga and anime and... why is my curtain moving? o_O

It's... not a serious thing, but I'd suggest cutting down a bit if it's "pretty all you do." However, you are misinformed on the meaning of "otaku."

Ignoring the metaphors in play, of course.

Unless you're spending ten hours a day on it, there's no need to cut down on anime/manga. However, that doesn't mean that you should just leave things alone.

First of all, go out and do stuff on a regular basis. The only cure for reclusion is adventure.

Worst come to worst, you could actually move to Japan. Learn Japanese and pack your bags. Just like that, you can turn a slightly embarrasing obsession into a source of pride. Worst case scenario: Japan isn't really that interesting and you return home a better person. Best case scenario: Japan is a wonderland where various girls with magical powers and odd hair colors will fight over your affections. Either way, going to Japan is a good call.
