It shouldn't really bother you. If you're happy with it, then just embrace it. I'm sort of becoming one, just a very lightweight variant. I have about 14 volumes of manga altogether, all from different series, not a lot I know but hey its a start. I just hope I don't let it consume me, like this guy let it consume him

By the actual Japanese definition of otaku, you aren't turning into one. You'd be a shut-in if you actually were. Going by the looser western definition of someone who really likes anime and manga, however, which you seem to be doing, be proud of it as nerds should take pride in their nerdiness (of course, I'm biased as a big anime fan myself).

Also, from what I know moving to Japan wouldn't be a terribly good idea; land is very expensive, and they're not too hot on the immigrants either. Now as for visiting, if you have the money I'd say go for it.
Yeah this is pretty much what I was gonna say.

Embrace your nerdiness. You'll be much happier for it.

Think you're turning Otaku,
you really think so?
You want a doctor, to take her picture, so you can look at her from inside as well...

An `Otaku` is someone who cannot communicate well with others, or face the reality of their lives, so they lock themselves into their rooms and loose themselves in computer games, the internet, comic books, anime e.t.c. It is quite a serious social illness.

I think it is more natural to have an emotional reaction to anime and manga than real life. You are still young and still have much more to experience.

If you like anime and manga stay where you are. The buisiness is much better abroad than it is in Japan. Japan is full of manga and anime, and I mean FULL of manga and anime. Most of which is simply terrible and appalling. If you go to a second hadn book store, it is full of manga which failed to take off.

Only the popular series tend to make it abroad. If a series gains popularity in Japan, the price of the manga and DVDs increases to almost 10 fold in some cases. A full set of Dragonball Z DVDs for example (not including dragonball or GT), costs about 1200 dollars...second hand.

Plus, everything is in Japanese, if you can imagine Japan to have its little pockets of English speaking Utopia, think again. There is not much manga or anime available in English, and the stuff that is is much much much more expensive.

By all means come and visit Japan sometime, I am not sure if you would like to live here though, I do not really want to live here. Things are expensive (and there is no good cheese)

You need to fix the title, it's "an otaku", and you need to capitalize the "i"'s, and put in a ' between he "i" and the "m".
I think I'm becoming a Grammar Nazi.

You're already a western-style otaku (Japanese form being an obsessive follower of anything; anime, games, celebrities, guns, aircraft, robots...). Frankly, if you've just started getting emotional at some of the things you read, you've just started getting as much out of them as is ideal. You're enjoying them to the fullest extent, and I think the authors would be ecstatic.

Speaking as someone who lived in Japan for a while, you'd want to learn at least a little of the language. The fact that you aren't Japanese would be both a disadvantage and an advantage. While I found people to be generally polite (especially when you reciprocate), you'll always be the odd one out. On the other hand, as a foreigner, you're allowed to be an odd one out. Japan's far from a perfect country, but where is? It's still beautiful there, and I wish you luck.

Now, to look for those two things you mentioned. Because, after all, <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.135672>I was lost long ago!

You're not an otaku. Not in its real sense. Westerners these days love to be called "otaku", like it is some badge of honour for taking a superficial interest in aspects of a foreign culture, and glamourising their otherwise obsessive hobbies and unhealthy anti-socialism with a vaguely understood label.

Don't aspire to be one. Don't act like one. Otherwise, you become a "weeaboo" (an annoying type of Japanophile who desperately tries to adopt a culture they only have a limited understanding of). Enjoy your anime and manga. Perhaps visit Japan. But don't expect to make it a major part of your life.

i dont see at a badge, its just easyer than any other way of describing it. i pride myself on having a goal to learn to speak japanese and the fact i have a passion for something. i have wanted to live in japan for years, way before i got into manga and anime. i have always had a love for the culture.

Recently i have started only showing any serous emotion when watching anime or reading manga, stuff like the ending to toradora! or ichigo 100% making me cry, even though i just dont cry. im just one of those people, i also dont realy show any exitment in much else now. my goal in life is to live in japan because i love the culture so much. im worried to say the least, i have enough social problems with out transforming into a otaku. i live in the south of england, nerds are rare let alone anime/manga otaku. pretty much all i do in my free time is read manga. is it time to cut down or am i just over acting?
Points for you to consider:

* Don't worry now, because in the west Japanese-obsessed folks are more-or-less accepted, even trendy. Worry if you get to Japan. If you ever do get to Japan, you will find out that western "otakus" are somewhat of a laughing stock. A friend of mine went to Japan and bought back heaps of newspaper clippings which had comic strips that made fun of Japanese-obsessed westerners. It's quite the running gag over there that white people are so dumb that all they can do is teach English and watch anime. She also lamented that Japanese men would do nothing but stare at her tits when she talked to them.

* Another friend of mine is white-looking but speaks fluent Japanese, he tried to buy a suit in Japan. He started talking to the shop assistant about things like the cut of fabric the suits were made of etc in very fluent Japanese. He was laughed out of the store, because the Japanese people in the store thought that a westerner who could speak fluent Japanese and also seemed to be intelligent was just the funniest goshdarned thing.

* Remember that "otaku" is a negative term in Japan. It has far more negative connotations than "nerd" does in western culture. Don't be quick to use that word or identify yourself as one because the meaning in Japan is a little different, in really subtle but important ways. I'll let you do the research there.

* It's quite normal to cry during a movie, in fact if it's a dramatic movie of some sort and it doesn't elicit some kind of emotional response, the people who made that movie aren't doing their job very well. Don't read too much into your emotional reaction. Maybe you're just growing up, or maybe you're just letting out emotion that's been been built up over other issues because you haven't been allowing yourself to cry over normal stuff.

Yeah so - keep enjoying anime etc... but get into other stuff too. Japan is a nice place but then so are many other places.

the OP has a bad understanding of what an otaku is.

it's not bad to like anime & manga (although you should always expand your interest IMO) alot of americans/europeans have been using the word outta txt anyways.

If you love massive crowds, being jammed into a train car with 100 other Japanese people, and live in in a 12x12 square then Japan is for you...

Your just bored and need something to do- My guess...

It's not healthy to focus entirely on any one thing. You should probably try to find other interests.
