Hmm, well, yeah not much like that, the only optimisation of your farm you need to do in it is how to actually grow your crops. There is a very harsh Runey system for when you are growing crops, it's very hard to achieve crops without a guide telling you where to properly grow them. The Runeys will basically eat and kill your crops if you don't manage them properly and place them properly. Otherwise I can't quite think of any other game that's like Harvest Moon but more challenging :(
That's on in Frontier, the numbered Rune Factory games on the DS/3DS and the Tides don't have that Runey system.

I've played a fair bit of Frontier, beating the 4 Seasonal dungeons, but the tediousness of maintaining the Runeys made me walk away. I've played a bit of Tides, but the Golem island moving mechanic confuses and infuriates me. I've played the shit out of RF3 and is a solid game. Frontier would have been my favorite, if not for the Runeys.

@OP: There still is a fair amount of optimization of your farm going on. When you start off, you're given a small amount of clear land and you eventually gain axe and hammer to remove stumps and boulders to further clear the land so it can be plowed for cultivation. Plowed land can be cultivated, but non-plowed land has the chance to spawn stumps, which you need for wood to expand your house and farm. Also, as you play you'll eventually get a barn and recruit monsters to assist you in your farm duties so you have more time for dungeon crawling.

In Frontier, there were different categories of monsters each with their own specific farm skill; This one waters plants, this one harvests vegetables, this one chops stumps, this one cuts the grass (monster feed), etc. They did everything but plow and sow the seeds. And, how much (or rather how long) of your farm they worked depended on their friendship level, which you raise by daily brushings, giving them gifts and taking them with you dungeon crawling. After harvested, everything is put into your sales bin, and if you get there before 5pm, you can take the items out and save/cook them.

In RF3, each monster could do everything but plow, but each monster only worked a quarter of the field. So, you only needed 4 monsters instead of one for each task. You could give them permission to sow the land, but they'd use the most basic seeds for the season and it would directly come out of your wallet. Also, if let the monsters harvest, they immediately put it into your harvest box which you can't take them out. So, you'll have to harvest the crops yourself if you wanted to cook with them.

I love the series, but have only played titles on the DS. The Rune Factory spin offs are absolutely amazing, I can't wait for Rune Factory 4. There is just so much more to do in the Rune Factory games than in the core series, by which I mean murder things and take their stuff, it livens up the gameplay quite a lot.

I effing love Harvest Moon. Magical Melody is one of my favourite games, and Rune Factory Frontier is just so much fun. It's nice and calm, and it's proof that games can be fun without killing things (but it's fun in Rune Factory).

Back To Nature is the one I've played the most of.
Never cared for the earlier SNES and 64 versions, and I honestly haven't enjoyed many of the ones post BtN, except for Rune Factory.

But yeah, LOVES me some BtN, prolly going to pick it up on PSN at some point.

Whats harvest moon? I'm serious I don't know of the series though it sounds like it's a Nintendo game which may explain this.
It's a farming simulation with cutesy sprites. It plays a lot like Animal Crossing or Viva pinata, but with clearer objectives, focus more on farming. (well, duh)

So basically this is what farmville ripped off. Fair enough, actually speaking of farming I remember an old Sim Farm game, wish there was a game like that now (not with a cutesy sprite look).

Ahh HArvest Moon the game that Farmville tried and failed to be, I'll never forget growing up with that series with my favourite titles being: Harvest Moon (GB version), Harvest Moon 2 and Harvest Moon: friends of Mineral town.

I just realised I've got so many titles to catch up on so I'm going to go ahead and ask, which up to date harvest moon best represents the one's I mentioned in any way?, because I'd love to start getting back into that series once more since they were great games for relaxing on a nice sunny day.

Some of the Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games (it's a very similar series) haven't been too bad, though i'm not a major fan of the series, I've played maybe two of the harvest moon games (I don't remember which ones) and i've played the heck out of Rune Factory 3 (replaying it now actually).

I think games like Harvest Moon and Rune Factory don't get talked about that much is because it's a niche appeal game and the newer ones are not favouribly reviewed in comparison to the older ones, especially the handhelds. But that's just my 2c

Oh, god, I love that series. I was just playing A Tale of Two Towns yesterday. Still More Friends of Mineral Town is my all time favorite of the series. Cliff <3333

It's a relaxing game and time sink. Awesome for those long plane rides.

Harvest Moon is one of the strangest pleasures I can describe. I'm doing something monotonous, but I enjoy it. It's like work, but without the actual rewards. I simply cannot explain it.

My first experience was with the Original SNES game, which to this day remains my favourite. Though the first DS Harvest Moon came pretty close to usurping it. A Wonderful Life probably approaches third place, for being vastly different yet somehow the same.

When I want to play a game and to just be wrapped up in happy and calm, Harvest Moon is what I go for. So simple and charming. I really enjoy them.

Think of it as the fun version of Farmville.

Runeys do show up in RF3, but you actually WANT to see them; they randomly pop up when you harvest a plant, and collecting them ups one of your stats permanently based on what color it is.

Yes, I didn't say the other games didn't have Runeys, I said they didn't have that Runey system.
RF3 didn't force you to micro manage the number of spirits in each part of town, else it'd kill off your crops.

The only Harvest Moon game I've played extensively was the one released on the GBA. I enjoyed but I have the same problem with Harvest Moon as I do with Animal Crossing games where I ignore all the side things and focus solely on making money. My poor farmer guy is doomed to a life of loneliness because I'm apparently a workaholic who cares more about a bigger harvest than love interests or community events :p

I alway thought it was more like it was a guilty pleasure sort of thing. Like MLP or Tenchi Muyo or even Ragnorok Online, it's something kiddie that we shouldn't indulge in, but at the same time we do it anyway because it is good kiddie fun, and there's nothing really wrong with it except that it seems childish. And since we're grown ups and we're living in the age of srs bans games, something like Harvest Moon only reinforces the stereotype of games just being another kind of toy for kids rather than an art all of its own.

Started with the SNES one
played all on DS (got them cheap at a flea market.
And it's only gotten more tedious over the years.
Running back and forth between you farm and the girl you try to woo with 10 p per present and needing a shit ton of points to get her to like you. I don't know. Kinda boring.

Rune Factory is much more fun, even the combat is really rudimentary.
