Going on the fact that I'll be playing this game for 150+ hours, it'll probably be my game of the year. Then again, I didn't really pick up too many other new games this year. All I can think of now is Fist of the North Star, which would probably make it my current GOTY. I've played Gears 3, and Battlefield 3, LA Noire... did Vanquish come out this year?

I'm gonna have to say no, and say it both with ease and proudly.

First off, never trust metacritic cause most of what you see is fanboy praise or fanboy rage. Want a good example? Look at Modern Warfare 3 and how many people who haven't played the game but don't like the series are giving it between 0-3. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if at least 75% of the people who praise it so greatly were Bethesda fanboys who think everything they make is pure gold.

Second, there are still a good amount of genuinely good games that have yet to come out or be reviewed that could take the title away(I'm looking at you, Skyward Sword). Until those games are out and all of Skyrim's competition has been considered, played, and reviewed by the masses, you can't claim that a game is GOTY.

Side note: OP seems to have some heavy bias though. From what I've seen, when someone calls out that Skyrim won't be GOTY he gets defensive...

Heavy-bias? No. I just don't understand what other game could be better, from all the games I've played this year...none of them even look as good as Skyrim. Again, 52 reviews can't all be wrong. But whatever, some people are convinced about a game no matter what other people say. If the game got 7/10 we wouldn't be here. So no bias.

Definitely not. For me open world games can never be GOTY and apparently Skyrim is a tad buggy. It's competition is too fierce so it'll win categories but not GOTY. I mean Rayman Origins looks like a more perfect example of it's genre. Then again i hated Oblivion so feel free to disregard everything I've said :)

What I think it is safe to say is that reviews, and Metacritic for that matter, don't mean a goddamn thing.

Yes, but only because compared to the RPG giant that is Bethesda no one else even comes close. I'm sure ME3 will try hard but it won't come close to Skyrim's open world.

That you should make your titles more descriptive.

Skyrim will be some people's GOTY. It will not be other people's GOTY. In the future, Bethesda will release a Skyrim GOTY Edition with all the DLC/expansions alongside it. Water is wet, and I look good in a suit.

All these facts and more can be found at www.Idon'tactuallyhaveawebsitefilledwithmyawesomefacts.com
You look shit in a suit you lieing scumbag!

And yes it will, but so does almost evergame it would seem.

It's possible. It seems like it could be the best game of the year, but only time will tell. Also,

That based on 49 reviews, with an overall 96/100 score on Metacritic that Skyrim will be GOTY. Tell me if you agree or not.
is not especially evidence because the game has either just come out (for the Aussies & maybe a few others) or hasn't come out yet.

The poll needs a "I don't know" option. Skryim comes out tomorrow for me, so I haven't played it yet. Even then though, we still have Saints Row the 3rd to wait for so you still can't say for sure. Right now, my favorite game that I've played this year has to be Batman: Arkham City

edit:
Also, reviews only serve to form preconceptions and recommendations on games. You can't really decide if something is your personal Game of the Year until you actually played it.

I knew before I clicked this was going to be a Skyrim thread. And yes it will get at least one GOTY award from someone. But, there is no definitive GOTY Award because there aren't any game award standards. Spike's VGA's are a joke... every other award is either some sort of popularity contest held by websites or magazine awards which may be suspect to bribes to "sell mor gamez!!!"

Now to Bethesda: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!

Skyrim is looking pretty good, but GOTY is always subjective. Saying that a game is definitively the Game of the Year is just silly, because people will always have differing opinions on the subject.

My personal favorite would be Dark Souls. While I played a ton of great games this year, none have really matched the amount of fun I've gotten out of that game.

No. Absolutely not. The metacritic score says nothing about how good the game will be, and certainly doesnt immediately reward the game with GOTY status.
Meta Critic has some VERY large problems as well, kid. Mainly the fact that they can / will remove scores that are too HIGH or too low. So basically, the meta critic score will always be average or above, never more or less.

Also, who cares, Modern Warfare 3 or Battle Field 3 will get game of the year just off of ravid fan votes alone, Skyrim may be good, but their fans aren't that deadly... Yes.

*Readies flaming sword, once it strikes enemy goes to eternal hell... The circle of rape.*

I got this thing off a great deal from best buy.

It's just what it seemed like to me, cause all the responses I saw from you were to people who disagreed with you and, while it may not have been intended, came off as them being wrong. Essentially, it seemed like you were attacking them for having a differing opinion. Again, don't know if that was the intention or not, just what I got out of it.

However, one thing that I can safely say though: you saying that Skyrim being better than all the other games you've played this year is your opinion. Other people have different opinions, and that's perfectly respectable. For example, I think that Skyrim will pale in comparison to Skyward Sword when that comes out.

You're right about one thing though for sure, and that's that all 52 reviews can't be wrong. Some can be biased, that's for sure, and others are bound to be from objective standpoints. At the end of the day though, what others say doesn't mean a damn thing. What matters is what you yourself think.
