as much as i love the 50 cal and shooting such a big round is great the cost is so hard to justify of the gun and of the round. If price is no object get the Barret its value is only going to increase with time and its such a nice gun get it.

Why do you need a Sniper rifle? Am I going to hear about you on the news sometime?
Inevitably, as anybody connected to the OP in any way (such as a forum) will be called in for questioning. Oh wait, shouldn't have posted then...

Seriously, why the fuck would you need a weapon capable of killing somebody from a mile away?! Get help...

Really, why on earth would any civilian need a 'sniper' rifle XD Whose vehicles were you planning on asploding with that beast?! Remember, zombies can't drive!

But yeah, obviously go for the Barrett - it's always the last gun to get unlocked so it must be the best - and you wouldn't want to look like a n00b without all the high-level unlocks, no would you? All the pro quick-scopers would laugh at you :p

No but seriously, hobbies that don't involve death or instruments thereof are probably better for you in the long run ;)

Go with the Bravo, and I can only assume your preparing for a Red Dawn situation. In that case,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DprFYMvWXLo

Thank god for the "Why?" option...

Barring that, and understanding that one person's hobby is another person's "wtf, why?", I'm just curious as to why you'd ask complete strangers...on the internet...which deadly weapon you should purchase.

Currently the longest kill with a sniper rifle was done the .338 winmag http://www.accuracyinternational.com/aw_series.php was the rifle used. The shot was done by a Canadian from 2475 meters, though there are unconfirmed US Special Forces snipers that are from farther away than that.

As far as the .50 goes, it makes one hell of a statement when you take it out, but as others have said it is possible to get damn near the same range and accuracy with the .338 round.

Or if you are looking for more of a mid ranged rifle a scoped M14 has really good range and great accuracy. A lot of the scout sniper platoons use either SR-25's or M14s.

You never explain why you want a high powered killing machine, so I'm just going to assume deer hunting, because that's really all 90% of rifles are ever used for anyways.

Don't buy a .50, think of what's going to happen to a deer when you shoot it with an anti-material rifle. There will be nothing left but hooves.

On the other hand, if you shoot it with the 7.62x51 (or the .308 winchester, one of the most popular hunting rounds available) there will be a very clean entrance wound and plenty of meat left over.

If you plan on hunting things like elephants, I would suggest getting out of Kansas.

And if it's humans you're looking at, I would look at getting admitted.

*edit*
The CheyTac Intervention is ugly as sin, but would probably be a better choice than a .50 anyways. The .408 round that it fires is just better in pretty much every way. They're smaller rounds, so you can carry more. They fly farther and faster, and only pack a slightly less powerful punch.

This is pissing me off to all of you "why do you need such a gun" i say do you need a fucking sports car? do you need a top of the line computer? a 59" 1080p tv? a huge house? a nice boat? no but its a fun thing to own and operate. In order to get a gun like the M82 you have to be cleared by fucking homeland security they do a background check and can fail you for having to many parking/speeding tickets. Its not like any nuts-o can get a fucking M82

.50 cal rounds aren't even supposed to be used on soft targets according to the geneva convention lol id go with the bravo since there is no point to having a .50 cal aside from looking cool

This is true, but the Geneva convention applies to the military, not private citizens.

Just out of interest does anyone know if they live somewhere where you can legally own this?

First, Get therapy, as No one in North America needs a .50 cal (at the moment). Second, depends on what you're shooting and what distance. M82 is good up to 800-1000 meters (I think, correct me if I'm wrong!), but if you're an actual army sniper, not only can you shoot farther (1200 - 1800m) if you have a McMillan Tac .50 (Canada's sniper rifle :)) you're looking at 2000m +. I've done some research, and yes it's very expensive for any rifle of that calibre. Stick with a .22, at the most .308, cause there's just no need for civilians to have a .50 cal.

I hope to God you don't get one (Or have one already, which you seem to). Civilians own high powered rifles, not sniper rifles. Are they the same thing? Yes. But the wording you use makes me nervous.
^^^That^^^

Anybody that actually goes around saying "I want to buy a sniper rifle" shouldn't be allowed to own a gun. That's like somebody going to their gun store and asking to buy an assault rifle.

In short, there are some great high power rifles out there for long range shooting (hunting/competition) but I somehow doubt you have the proper mindset/maturity to own firearms.

The M82A1 is an anti-material rifle. That leaves you with the one option in the list.

If you preferred to buy something reasonably priced, I'd suggest a quality (or custom) varient of the Remington 700, which forms the basis of the US Army's and USMC's M24 sniper rifle.

You Americans and your weapons... is there anything you aren't allowed to buy?
I'd say unless you're planning in advance for a zombie apocalypse or you want to overthrow the gouvernment where's the point in owning a sniper rifle?
The simple fact of the matter is that the difference between a "Sniper Rifle" and "Hunting Rifle" generally lies in the nebulous realm of who's holding the weapon in question. If the weapon is mechanically able to deliver a round on a man-sized target at 700+ meters, it's fully capable of being a sniper rifle. As it turns out, most modern hunting rifles using high quality ammunition can readily achieve this. As I said already, the standard issue sniper rifle in the US arsenal is simply a custom Remington 700 - itself a legendary hunting rifle. There are other weapons just as a capable, but the popularity of the Remington ensures easy access to a wide variety of accessories along with a premium price tag.
