I've not played IX, am playing X at the moment and it's OK...

But the correct answer to this is VI. By a million miles the best Final Fantasy game in existence.

Failing that give Chrono Trigger a go. One of the best JRPGs of all time. Secret of Mana is supposed to be good as well, although I never really got into it (turns out the SNES was a great platform for solid RPGs).

If you wanted something more recent, Ni No Kuni!!!!!
I'd grant you FFVI, I'm also a huge fan of FFV.

For the OP: If you really liked FFIV-VII, you will love FFIX. You'll feel less warm and fuzzies for it if FFVIII and FFX and later are more your preference.

Also, seconding Chrono Trigger as Square at the height of their ability.

Now, 9 is my favorite game in the series, but play 10. Everyone knows IX is amazing, but X gets a lot of undeserved flak, and you should check it out so you can see why those people are wrong. Tidus is the most relatable and human protagonist in the entire series, the combat kicks ass, and there's an insane amount of side content.
Excuse me but

I've only played and beaten the first 7, so I don't have any basis for comparison beyond that. I did watch a LP of XIII once and I'm glad I did because it kept me from spending money on it(which I was seriously considering at that point).

I am going to do a replay of CT someday, because I managed to grab copies of Crimson Echos and Flames of Eternity and would like to try them both at some point.

Anyway, I appreciate all of the feedback and after looking at all your responses, I'm going to play IX first and then move on to X. Then I'll see where it goes from there.
