Im for protecting American rights of ownership. Yes Sony is a company built for profit, but you do realize that even if you count in all the worst case scenarios its not going to cause Sony to break down into financial insolvency.
I cannot stress this enough. We as individuals and consumers absolutely have to get over giving away our rights because we think "Piracy R Bad" because piracy absolutely has nothing to do with this.

By siding with Sony, and should Sony come out on top on this in the long run, it creates precedent that will be not only be manipulated by sony but by other corporations. This would be a foot hold to take even more rights and freedoms away later.(See what I did there? I used the same bullshit "piracy" logic to damn Sony just like people use it to condemn hackers)
I am really sick of this "If one does it, everyone must be doing it, and that is the ONLY reason to do it" Ive said this before and I guess I will keep saying it as long as this comes up.. this logic that this isnt a legitimate thing because its only purpose is piracy is sort of like saying we should outlaw alcohol because its only purpose is for daterape.
Ill just prove the point here. Opensource handheld devices manufactured outside of the US are legal to be sold in the US. You can pick them up off thinkgeek.com such as The wiz, The Caanoo, the Pandora, etc. These devices can hypothetically be used to run illegal rom software. However they are still sold legally within the US. And even the emulator software is granted protections because the emulators are not illegal, its the illegal use of roms/imgs that are not legitimate, and the form of piracy. Now, look at the repository for software for these devices.

Now look at ANY of these repositories... and you will see that the larger bulk of software available is not even the Emulators, but it is homebrew applications created and shared by individual users.(homebrew independently developed games, applications, etc) Also look at the community behind these projects and you find out that these people who are crafting these programs categorically discourage piracy and do not host nor do they encourage means of which to illegally obtain software for the purpose of piracy.
Sony does not deserve one Iota of public support in their current crusade. Aside from the fact that they are more than financially capable of defending themselves from piracy, they are out and out wrong in the assertations they have made. Piracy is NOT the looming monster that if we give one inch against will destroy gaming. The only looming monster is Sony seeking to destroy anything that infringes not on their intellectual property, not their financial security, but their profit and is more than happy to stand behind the notion of using litigation to absolve ownership rights established long ago in order so that they may freely use bait and switch tactics when they realize someone has done something they didnt intend that "could" be used to disturb their cash flow.
If anything gets truly damaged out of all this, is that gaming will be hurt, because this type of litigation only serves to prevent individuals from expanding what gaming is, and keeps gaming in its stagnate corporate form.
