This is just something I was mulling over lately. With all the things that consoles can do now days, they're almost PC's. But, that means they're extremely expensive, too. If a game console came out that was cheaper and just played games, would you buy it? Consider that you would have internet, but you couldn't get on the web. There would be a store to download titles and all of the current cross platform games would be available. It would be like an economic console system. So, would you buy it?
How is option four a paradox?

Most of the content is useless, except the movie playing part, but I have already bought a console and I have run out of money, so if the new console was under $20 I would consider it.

Would this console be able to play games online? If so, then yes. Games are literally all I use my 360 and Wii for.

The bells an whistles should be stripped if it means I can buy the console cheaper. I don't watch movies or store music on either my Xbox or PS3. And the 3 hour PS3 updates for...picture storage? are incredibly irritating and redundant. People buy consoles for the GAMES and playing ONLINE with OTHER PEOPLE, not sitting around and mulling through their collection of family photos they randomly decided would be good to put on their console. If it made the PS4 or Xbox180 (Or whatever) cost only $200 instead of $400-500 upon release, I'd totally jizz my pants with excitement. Maybe the features should EXIST, but need to be purchased and downloaded as add-ons for the system, or have the hardwear installed and have people just go online and purchase a code for 20$ so that can choose to have those extra features that most other people never use. If you can afford to buy a PS4 for $400, but you get a basic version for $200, you should have no prob goin online and paying your $20 to unlock the use of a internet browser.

I don't need a console to be my entire entertainment center. I've got a decent computer for that. I would be soo down with paying less for something that just played video games (and did it well) but didn't include a blu-ray player or whathaveyou.

Yes, it'd be just like any other console only without the web browser or movie viewer, ect.

I'd buy it in a heart beat. If a company went back to basics and focused on what a console was meant for. I think it would be a great concept

I'd like a console with nothing but the ability to play games. No online, no downloads, just games. It's all I use my xbox 360 for so everything else was just a waste to include.

I probably wouldn't notice.

I use my PC for everything important.
I'm of the same opinion. My consoles are a PS2, a Dreamcast and a Wii, the last of which is in the house but not actually owned by me. Not counting PC, naturally. Even on the Wii, I don't use online stuff, so...

An offline machine with nothing fancy added? It'd change nothing. Nothing at all.

Really.... I don't want to see another Sega. It's really not required.

I'd like to see the next gens hook up with someone like Google. I'd like to see them do everything they currently do, but also have the flexibility and power to kick out... the world, and a world that is supported, upgraded, open, and standardized.

Sony was doing well to attempt Yellowdog Linux on their console. However this was poorly implemented. (Sec before you scream :) ) The way they did this left the console effectively living a split personality. It also required setup and reading that left it to a small community. Of course, when this capability was brought out, this was the state of technology and Linux. We've moved past this barrier especially with Android, and with Android's user interface it's simple enough for grandma.

The thing is, the new consoles aren't going to be cheap. Even the ones that are (Wii) have more then enough power to run pretty much all the bells and whistles.

If you're referring to bells and whistles as the latest and greatest tech (Blueray at the time), that would be a solid debate.

It could be argued that starting low and allowing the bells and whistles through upgrades might be the path, but this has proven to be a bad path. Both the 32x and Sega CD were great pieces of hardware, but only a small percentage of Sega owners actually bought one. If I were a game designer I'd avoid these upgrades like the plague as it limit's my audience. This means fewer titles for the upgrade. The upgrade effectively defeats it's self as fewer would buy it due to the lack of content (meaning fewer devs want to touch it).

Nintendo did well without the bells and whistles, but it owns it's own little niche. This is kind of like Farmville and other social media games.

On the other side of the house, you've got a huge player base that wants more complexity in games. This base doesn't play much Farmville or Nintendo. These are the people who go back and play their favorite oldies and come back saying "Wow, I don't remember the graphics being so horrible". This base requires the latest and greatest hardware to compete with hardware that will be out in the coming years. Because of this it's more then worth it to come out with a piece of hardware that is so powerful and complex that first games only use a percentage of the available power. This gets expensive.

Where do I sit? I'm with the non-Farmville/Nintendo players. Course, all of this is pointless I guess.... if I have my choice I'll have the best of the "game players". The PC. (BTW The X-box controllers works great on it.)
(Somehow I completely missed your post, sorry about that. Really, I have no idea how I missed it.)

Anyway, I'm mostly on the "don't play Farmville" group but I have dabled in it and there are Nintendo games I like as well. But anyway, on topic, I just see a console that was cheaper selling really well. I mean, sure you wouldn't get the exclusives and you wouldn't be able to play online with anyone other then other "cheapstation" owners, but you could still have a gaming experience for a cheap price. But if you're a PC only gamer, then you're not really affected by this poll anyway, but I see what you're saying. I'm honestly surprised that Google hasn't tried to get into the console market yet.

I have a computer for a reason.
I've surfed, listened to CDs and stored stuff that aren't games, demos, DLC and etc., just as much on the PS3 as I have on my NES.

Had to go with the last option, because I don't game on consoles.

But if I did, I don't think I'd really need all the bells and whistles - I have to maintain a computer anyway, so replicating part of the functionality on another machine doesn't serve any purpose for me.
Haha, well I'm glad you picked an option, lol. Yeah I agree that if you have both, I'd see where you wouldn't have much of a need for it. Still, if thats all it did, it would save you some room on your harddisk.
and some people just like the console interface. Personally I prefer a mouse and keyboard, but i can see the appeal of a controller interface.

I pretty much just use my consoles for playing games anyway, so sure, as long as the games are good enough and have enough exclusives to make it worth buying instead of just sticking with my 360 then I'd buy it.

This. I mean, I have a Wii, PS3 and 360 so I can play exclusives, so why not get that too.

I only use my gaming console for gaming in the first place, so we've not made any manner of departure from the norm here. It'd be wunderbar if I could get what you've described and only have to pay for it on a sliding scale of some sort.

I rarely use my consol for anything beside playing games, that's what a COMPUTER is for!

So yeah, I'd probably buy it.

They made that. It was called the Gamecube. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube

It was a pretty great system, but the disc gimmick was most likely it's undoing. If not for the controller (which frustrates me to this day) I probably would have gotten one.
