How would you feel if in Persona 5 you had real time combat and could move around your character instead of just selecting stuff from a menu.
I was watching smt devil summoner 2 gameplay and it looked like the character was controlled this way (without the menus and turn based-ness) personally I kind of like menu combat but I might have more fun if it were real time. It may also make the games more popular.

How would you feel about it?

More popular? I'm pretty sure that behind Final Fantasy, and possibly Dragon Quest/the Tales games, Shin Megami Tensei is one of the most popular JRPG franchises right now, with Persona in particular being the most well-known. And I could be wrong, but I don't really think people play it mostly for the combat, judging by the reactions I've seen to Persona 3's The Answer addition.

Anyway, I've found that as I've gotten older, real-time or pseudo-real-time combat is more appealing to me now than turn-based, because I like feeling like I'm doing slightly more than ordering people around (incidentally the same reason I can never really get into RTS'). That said, turn-based combat isn't exactly going to kill an RPG for me either.

What I found most impressive about the modern Persona games was the turn-based combat. The "one more" system added an extra layer of strategy to what would otherwise be a very traditional combat system. Because of weaknesses and resistances, it is crucial that you pick your spots carefully when it comes to attacking and buffing, and you have to be careful in how you attack.

I feel it could become competitively viable like Pokemon if ATLUS explored it a little more. And goddamn, Pokemon is ridiculous.

I enjoy the combat system that 3 and 4 have, but I'd be open to trying a real time system. Of course, it would depend on how it done. Some real time combat systems get boring pretty quickly, while others remain fun for a long time. If they did do a real time system and it sucked, then I would want to go back to the old turn based system, but I have no automatic bias against real time combat.

I think that as long as I could face out, hold out and reach out to the truth I don't care what they do to the menu combat system.

No way. Real-time combat involving multiple party members is usually a recipe for disaster, particularly in a series like Persona where a single bad move can ruin you in late-game dungeons.

Persona 4 was the most popular game of the series yet, do you really think they need to branch out now at the cost of the existing formula? That would be as drastic a change as axing the entire social simulation aspect which, like it or not, is something the audience has come to expect.

If it was done similar to the Raidou games I might be okay with it but I really don't think it's necessary. The games already have excellent game play and messing with it in such a way could be disastrous.

While I'm very much interested in doing so, I've never played a Persona game yet, so I don't have much business posting in this thread. However, for what it's worth, I loooooooooove me some turn-based menu combat like I've seen in Persona gameplay. There are already few enough of these types of games as it is, so I'd think it a shame for one of the more prominent series featuring a turn-based system to lose that.

I would still probably play and enjoy the game, but at this point I think Persona needs to stick to its guns and just keep the turn-based formula.

If the RTS aspects were reasonably well done, I wouldn't mind. I'd see it much more likely as a Baldur's-Gate-ish real-time-with-ample-pauses gameplay, however; the series loves its mountains of statistics too much to both keep them and still have playable purely real-time combat.

Of course, I would be delighted if they refined the masses of statistics into something much less clunky, but that's unlikely to happen.

Meh, I feel like the current system is fine and would rather see them expand on it than go for real-time combat. Honestly, I don't really care either way though, as the combat is hardly my favorite part of the series. As long as P5 has social links and good characters, story, and music the combat could be a series of quick time events for all I care.

I suggest they drop any non-menu based interactions. Walking around, maps, everything. It's not like people who play this game won't buy it just because it's bad. It's the same reason I bought Final Fantasy XIII an XIII-2 (Actually nearly enjoyed that one surprisingly, would have been better if Sera and Nole had been flattened 2 minutes in and replaced by less annoying characters and if there was a "set Mog on fire" mini-game, kupo.).

Losing turn-based combat would make the game poorer for it.
What some seem to forget is that turn-based is there so that the player can think about strategy, rather than it merely being 'menu combat'.

Part of the appeal of the Persona series is chatting with NPCs.
And it serves a purpose, because you have to build up relationships to increase how powerful your personas can become through combining. Removing that element would leave the game too repetitive, because you need something to do between dungeon crawling and story missions.

I suppose it would have to depend on how it was implemented. If it was done like combat in Star Ocean, then that could be pretty good although I'm not sure how well that'd work with the whole Persona summoning thing.

Except that the whole walking around maps, social interaction thing is a key component of those games. Removing that would be like removing the guns from Call of Duty.

I'd be happy just to have P5.
Combat is part of the game but it's not the part I play for. As long as it was still challenging I wouldn't complain.

Eww. No.

Unless we're talking about something like Kingdom Hearts, where's it's all real-time combat with summoning and melee combat still intact.

I would still prefer the old menu-based system, though.
