Been replaying Phantasy star (yeah, on a retro RPG kick) and been loving the fact the main character is a woman, and a strong one at that.
Alis Landale, baby, hell yeah!

And my personal reaction to "Samus is a girl" would probably be:

"Really?!. Huh. Wow. Now I'm gonna have to replay the game to see if there are any hints that give it away at all." This, of course, presumes that she had bulkier armor without the metal breasts and hourglass waist that made her look feminine in the "Prime" trilogy.

Where's the "I don't care but people would be getting put down for rabies" option? Because that's the one I would pick.

So... you want use to assume if it was today, with all the female characters we have now still in tact. Am I right?

Cause if so, I dont thik it would be a huge deal. I mean, we've had female heroins that were good role models, so today it would probably seem just kinda quaint.

I think that with characters development and story in games today that in order to do this you would have to make a bland character where gender doesn't even come into play. Then when they make the reveal nobody would care and it wouldn't change anything. Like if master chief was a girl ([sub]not that the games aren't good, but it's undeniable that master chief is a bland character and that it's hard to care for him[/sub]). So I think that it would have about 30% of the (based on nothing) the shock/wow factor as it did in the 80s (and as long as the game is as good as metroid)

I'd really like to think that we'd be able to tell with today's graphics, unless they kept the character deliberately extremely androgynous, but that's cheating.

Ehh I liked metroid, had fun with most metroid games including one that was on the game boy something or other, but I was somewhat dissapointed with what Ninja did with samus. Not really "Holy **** what have they done!?" but it made me shake me head.

I personally love strong female leads. See Ripley, the badass astronaut from Alien... she really set the stage for characters like Samus... until... you know... Team Ninja smacked her around a good bit. Female leads can offer a nice change of pace and challenges the immersion factor of male gamers in a positive way. I play pen and paper games and am used to players playing the opposite sex (I myself have played a female before and my sister is currently playing a male in a Pathfinder campaign). I understand how some people may not understand the concept, but honestly I'd like to think the video game industry had matured beyond this being a relevent factor.

Why not make this a discussion of the female leads that ARE happening today? I don't consider strong female characters or a once-was or a should-be, if you think there aren't enough of them, write/create some more! :D

If there was a reveal to that today, it'd be by a game done by Team Ninja, and after the reveal, you'd unlock a bikini outfit for your next playthrough.

Because the gaming industry really respects women.

Also, that would be a good thing to fit into Ninja Gaiden 3...

and cut to current day, where a developer was forcibly told to make their female lead male, Gears Of War fans raged and spat at the idea of female cogs in GOWIII, and some people seem to find the idea of playing as a woman being abhorrent.
if i remember correctly in the gears universe there are so few humans left that women are not allowed to serve as front line soldiers because they are supposed to be pregnant as often as possible to repopulate whatever the planet is called.

Not really sure, the world could be vastly different if Samus wasnt a woman, but thenagain, back then there was only 8-bit noises and chunky graphics, so it would be hard to tell if someone was a girl or not if they were wearing armor. (the surprise probally struck harder since there wasn't things like the internet, plus ambigous manuals)

But in modern games, everything is in 3d and uses real noises, it would be hard to hide the gender of a character unless they themselves wore bulky armor too or if the game they're in had (soundless) dialog in an RPG, plus it would be hard NOT to be spoiled since the internet is everywhere.

If it weren't for the box art, noone would know for sure that Gordon Freeman was a man. Esp. if he had an androgynous name like "Jessie"
