They conversed with each other, and even to humans, they had expressive faces and human voices and they conveyed emotions.
I disagree about that, alien emotions shouldn't really be readable by humans. How do you tell is a crocodile is feeling depressed by looking at its face?
Well if it hasn't bitten my own face off I assume it must be reasonably placid.

OTOH, that's not to say they shouldn't be people, in some sense.
Yeah but that's what I mean, they don't have to look human but they need to have some kind of human-like charaterisitics, some kind of personality that can be conveyed in how they behave, look or emote beyond just 'grah kill'. Like those Gorn up there, I can't really imagine them doing anything other than killing and shooting stuff, they don't really have an attitude beyond that. But again in Halo we see Sangheili have a wide range of emotions and even saw how they behave in non combat scenarios and it was actually kind of interesting.

Then 343 happened...

Well, that was kinda the point in the TOS story with the Gorn, their Captain later claims that the Federation had encroached on their territory and provoked the attack. Whether or not that is true, it was a reveal that they just aren't mindless monsters.

Kirk even mentions that in his recording, something about the Gorn looking like a mindless monster, but that he needs to remember it's a space captain, and has to be at least reasonably intelligent, and that he can't judge by appearances.

True, fair enough. I admittedly don't know much about Star Trek but I just saw a chance to rant about poor reptilian representation so I took my time to do it.

But still my point is that I really hate it when aliens are made to look monstrous, and the use of reptiles to achieve this effect annoys me as I like reptiles, as a way of deeming them 'okay' to kill. Because it basically says that racism is okay as long as the other party isn't pretty or doesn't look like us.

Oh yeah, definitely, Star Trek put a twist on it, but it still requires people to hate lizards for it to work.

The only exception I can think of is half snake, half human ladies. Who must really hate dirty floors, slithering around all over the place, especially the ones that don't move upright, they'd be collecting all sorts of things in their cleavages.

I'd have to agree with a lot of the people here. I feel if they took the appearance of the STO Gorn somewhat. It's close enough to the original design for the most part and works well visually in my opinion. Given how they did the Klingons in Into Darkness I'd think achieving a similar effect with the gorn wouldn't be too difficult if they did make them look the way they did in STO. And certainly it's better than taking a visually amazing movie and slapping a dude in a rubber suit. The movie studios are sort of obligated to make a very cinematic looking piece given what they've done so far.

I suppose my point is that the studio has to present things in a more realistic way given what they've done so far. My only hope is that they don't go the horrible monster route and just make them look like they did in the tie-in game.

There was a Gorn on Star Trek Enterprise. It was done in CGI.

It did not look very good.
It's okay though.

We all know Enterprise never actually happened.

[sub][sub]After all, it's not like that was the only thing about Enterprise that didn't look very good...[/sub][/sub]
speak for yourself, I liked enterprise more than both DS9 and voyager.
