If backwards compatibility is not an option N64, otherwise toss up between the Wii or PS3.
I put N64 though simply because it'd still be a contender regardless.

PS2. Has the best selection of games in my opinion and is played more than my 360 and ps3 combined.
Yea.
There's a lot more "favorite games" on the ps2 than the ps3. The ps2 had a lot of interesting and different games. Also, many of my favorite franchises from last generation turned to total crap this generation: GTA & Burnout.

As for nostalgia, I appreciate the old nes and even the old intellivision games for what they were at the time but at this point, I only ever play those games on my phone now. That's a trip.

So why wasn't the ps2 on the list anyway? It was one of the biggest consoles of all time: at this point in the last console cycle (when the ps2 was as old as the 360 is now) the ps2 had sold more units than the ps3 & 360 combined.

PS3 with backwards compatibility, either that or a PS2. It has the biggest and most diverse library, and 10 or however old it is years later, I'm still finding awesome games for it.

Which console would it be out of these 8 options?

Edit: I didn't put PC as an option because its function isn't a dedicated gaming machine, rather a utility with gaming options. And no, consoles aren't utilities with gaming options because they're built first and foremost for games, with the DVD and other capabilities tacked on for a wider market.
Also because you can (which I don't condone) emulate most console games on a PC and that defies my initial posting. Also not looking for modded consoles.
PC for me.

As well did you know that the first video game [http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/history/higinbotham.asp] ever created was on a computer?

To say that PCs are not made for gaming, you are simply condoning all Console port games since they in turn were all created off a PC.

Yes yes, PC had the first game. Blah blah blah. It still stands to my point that the PC wasn't built to play games, rather games were programmed for PC later as an afterthought. The NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, TG16, NeoGeo... you get where I'm going yet? these were all dedicated consoles, made solely for games. PS2, Xbox, and the current gens of those 2 had/have DVD/BluRay functions respectively but aren't meant 100% to do those things, its a convenience, whereas the average PC today still isn't a dedicated console with utility options tacked on.
In other words, because of their versatility and the average usage, PC's are not dedicated gaming platforms, they're utility machines with a game function added.
Do I say PC sucks? no, I wanted to get people to think outside of their "box" for a minute, get out of the comfort zone of "zomg my PC can do all that". Obviously most of these PC heads just can't live without their PC if they can't call it a dedicated console.
I can also shit in a bucket and call it a dedicated toilet. Doesn't mean thats the buckets initial and sole function. PC's are word processors, overpriced calculators, internet tools, programming tools, spreadsheet organizers, etc. They're so multi-function theres no way they can be a dedicated gaming machine. Sorry.

Interested that you didn't put PS2 on the list.

I would still have picked my trusty 360, but most people I know list the PS2 as their favourite dedicated gaming console.

Well I would still want a PC. Even just a 100MHz Pentium that wasn't fast enough to emulate any consoles. I want to play Civilization, XCOM: UFO Defense, Monkey Island 2, Starcraft and DOOM. I want to play fps games with a mouse like Quake and maybe Half Life. I want to play Frontier: First Encounters, Diablo, Populous 2. Maybe Baldurs' Gate and Fallout.

The poll is bullshit. There is a whole world of great games that I can't pick just because they didn't come out on a 'dedicated games machine'. Frankly I'd rather be playing those games than the SNES back catalogue. Or even the PS2 back catalogue. And where is the PS2 anyway?

My PS3, because it can play PS1 and PS2 games as well.

If you mean I'll only be able to play games that are a part of one of those consoles, then I'll have to choose the PS2.

no ps2, dreamcast, or ps1 options....

ps2 would be my top choice

but from the poll options.....hmmm....PS3, simply because i can download older games on it. which is kinda cheating. SNES comes in second.

my job requires me to basically live in a hotel for 6-8 weeks at a time. Guess which console i brought with me? yup my trusty ps2.

joke is on me though, this TV in the hotel doesnt even have component output.......and im stuck here for 2 weeks at least.

at least i have my trusty PC.

Anyway, are gamecube games particularly hard to get there? (For instance, if there's cheap second-hand stuff around, what does it tend to be?)

Eh. Like I said it's often just luck finding things cheaply. (And big cities - the more places you can check, the more likely it is you'll find what you're looking for without it costing a fortune. But... Some things are nevertheless incredibly rare.)
Well, there is a store I'm well connected with that sells all the games from the last gen of consoles. The other day I could have got a ps2 with all the MGS titles on it for about $60 - but I was hunting GCN, y'see.

Anyways, yeah they have a ton of games but the rarest was probably pikmin. No Tales of Symphonia, Eternal Darkness, Crystal Chronicles, Gladius, MP2... the games I really want. They had twin snakes but it cost $65
Well, that sucks. Not much more you can really say. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. >_<
