Tonight I was driving with my gf and her radio stopped working and all of her lights went dim, now since she has some infrequent electrical problems I pulled into the nearby inn and when I stopped the car it wouldn't start again (I swear I'm getting to the point). So the point is while we were waiting for help to arrive at least 15 cars had pulled into the parking lot and drove right past and about 3 of those cars pulled in about 40 feet from us and unloaded and headed on in. Now I understand if you were on the highway or a major road not stopping but these people were going to their hotel rooms and I thought wow not a single person even asked if we were okay.

So the point (separated for all you TL;DR's) is would you stop for someone on the road?

EDIT: at this point I believe I can assume two things first that most of my fellow escapists suck with cars, and second that most of you wouldn't stop if I had free candy.

To clarify the car hood was open and we were standing around it in the cold looking concerned (I understand not stopping for a car that doesn't look like it is having issues)

How cold is it?

Really, though, I wouldn't be able to help, because I know nothing about anything related to car problems.

But I would, y'know, maybe call a tow truck for you or something, assuming you didn't have a phone.

I'd at least ask. Unless I was in a hurry/late for something. Then you're on your own! :p

that depends haha technically it was just short of 50F I believe but because winter just started hitting it feels somewhere closer to mutha ukin f-f-f-freezing.

Also if you had jumper cables you would have been a ton of help

Well, I don't actually have a car, so I'd, like, be on the bus or something. XD (I'd be no help here, I realize.)

And I ask how cold it is because it would be more understandable if, say, you happened to be in my city right now. Snowfall warning tonight (possibly 20cm of snow by tomorrow afternoon), and it's currently 21F outside.

That would make it more understandable, I think.

If people want my help all they have to do is ask or else I will assume they are handling things however they please.

I'm not any good with cars, so I wouldn't help. Maybe we can chat though until help arrives?

I think it depends where I'd see the car and who sits in it...I mean, I think many people first think about a trap (too many media stories...). So I think, I would not leave my own car and just see through the window and ask something if possible. If someone had a real accident, I would definitely help. But I could never repair a car on my own anyway, so I guess that I would simply be able to call someone.

I'm not really good with cars but I've been known to stop and help, I mean I've pushed strangers cars for 5 blocks before, and the other day I got out of the bus just help some guy pick up the things that he dropped, they were those ice candies "bolis" we call them here, don't know how that would translate, but anyway, it's quite probable I tend to do that a lot, though there are times when I'm in a bad mood that I just can't be bothered, but for the most part it's quite likely even though I probably wouldn't be of much help since I'm not really good with cars.

Try to see the situation from the viewpoint of "those callous bystanders". You were parked up by an inn, not stranded in the middle of nowhere. They probably assumed that you either had the situation under control or that help was on its way.

If you had asked for help, chances are about 50% of those people would have at least tried to give you some advice or a bit of assistance.

I know next to nothing about cars so I doubt I'd be any help anyway, there isn't much point in me stopping to help. I'd assume this is the same for a lot of people. The only thing I could offer to help would be a phone or some change to use a payphone, you would have to ask me for these I'm not going to go up to everyone that looks like they're having some trouble and offer them a phone and change, I'd end up getting robbed. Also you shouldn't have just stood around waiting for someone to help you, most people aren't that kind, you should have just asked for help.

I guess in that situation it's a bit tricky, people may have already assumed that you help on the way, or that you had asked someone in the hotel to help. It doesn't necessarily mean that people were ignoring you just because they're bastards. However, one of my friends who was pregnant at the time had a flat tyre once and noone stopped to ask her if she was ok or needed help.

Definitely not if I'm driving alone. If I'm with friends, maybe, as long as we didn't have somewhere we needed to be.

You know, in this day and age, I'll assume everybody has a cellphone on them and has called whoever they have to call (car club, police, shop, friends/parents).

If they are in distress, I expect them to NOTIFY ME, by waving their hands or whatnot.

Ask for help and I will give it. I'm not going over there assuming you need help though. Chances are you don't need it, and I just wasted my time.

Am I a mechanic? No, you can probably do as much as I can. I'd certainly offer to help roll it off the road if you'd broken down in the middle, but I don't know how to fix it.
