It already did, I was on a channel that wanted me to pay 1.99 to watch an 11 minute episode of a show.

I laughed and went on my way.

Fuck that noise. Luckily the video makers that I follow realize that screwing over their customers is a bad idea, so I might stick around, only to watch their stuff. Wouldn't watch any of the pay-per-view or paid subscription shit though. The only stuff that deserves that is really high-end stuff, like your HBO specials and the like, and most people on youtube aren't that.

If it went to a pay-to-watch for all channels, No. Even if it was cheap like $5 a month, I mainly put on a let's play or something as background noise while I game or something. And I wouldn't pay for background noise, unless I'm going to actually listen to it (Like music, or a movie or something).

If only certain channels did it. Yeah, I would still view it, since I doubt any of the people I watch (mainly LPs and random uploaders) would charge anything.

If uploaders could choose certain videos for the pay-to-watch, I probably would just avoid those videos, unless it was something I REALLY wanted to see. And even than I could probably find it free elsewhere.

It all comes down to the quality of the content.

Everyone... EVERYONE sneered at the new york times when they decided to go to a pay model for their articles.

And now, they're essentially the only newspaper company that isn't rapidly sliding into bankruptcy, and their stock price reflects the profits (ie: its not approaching zero), because there are people willing to pay for content without the rapid slide towards crazy headlines to drive pageviews.

Oh shit hold on, "an open letter to women from men" gotta click brb

It's really an unnecessary question. This kinda thing has happened before. When something so popular has been free for so long and suddenly goes for-pay everyone's gonna get annoyed. YouTube has every right to make the decision to charge its users if it wants to, just as long as they realize that they'll lose, like, 80% of their viewers. It's like when Microsoft announced that Hotmail might go for-pay LOL that was just hilarious.

You'd think that taking a website with MILLIONS of daily active users and stuffing it to the brim with non-stop advertising would be more than enough money for those guys.

Anyway, I doubt I would pay. Though I'm also not sure more than one or two of the channels I watch has the notoriety.

Never underestimate the power of greed.

...Great, now I'm probably going to attract a bunch of "corporations are supposed to make money!" posts.

I only really watch lets players like Gassymexican, eatmydiction, vash12349 (even though he doesn't call himself a lets player), darkmindedsith and griffinlobster. Would I pay money to watch them? No I wouldn't. I find them enjoyable, but I wouldn't pay money to watch it, and I can't think of anyone I know that would pay for youtube either.

I'd never pay a single cent for YouTube. THAT's what made it big and popular. It's a free massive sharing website. Having to pay for it? no.
I can live with only the big channel, but the problem is what would happen in the future..

It depends on how much it would be. Like $2-$5 would be alright. But I would only pay for Game Grumps and SSoH. Because they're the only ones that put out enough quality content for it to be worth it. That would fucking suck though.

No way I would pay for something that has to be free. It's youtube for a reason so that everyone in the world has access too.

I watch youtube only for my favorite channels anyway which is either gaming news or let's players or whatnot.

One thing I've learned by working on the internet is that people are much more inclined to do something if it's free. This is why the current monetized system works. Advertisers pay content creators to run ads on their content, content creators provide free content to a fanbase. The consumer doesn't have to actually spend any money and that eliminates all consumer risk. The fact of the matter is that it's much easier to give a million people something for free than it is to get a thousand people to buy it. If youtube ever tries this, it will fail horribly.

I really wouldn't. Right now I only really watch daily or weekly uploads of a handful of channels, and I doubt any of those would become pay-to-watch. And if they would, I wouldn't want to watch them anyway

Nope, and judging by the reactions here many others.

for reasons already stated.

Exactly why youtube will probably never go into a pay model, specially with something that was previously free it would not work.

IF they do it, some people will pay, but that is most likely a minority. This will cause the fee to rise due to costs and all, and then ever more people leaving.

I wouldn't pay for a subscription to a channel, no. If YouTube started charging for access to their site, then I probably would pay (depending on the price, of course). Such a thing would be ridiculous though as the number of users (both posters and viewers) would plummet.

No. The popular channels I watch don't put out videos very regularly and, those that do, are only 10 or so minutes long. Sure, I go on YouTube everyday and watch videos constantly, but I wouldn't pay a subscription fee to see those videos. I'd just watch other things.

Gassy and Diction are two of the funniest people (or bears) on youtube. People like them are worth paying for.

A lot of shit is not though.
