No Harima Kenji, ought no to be allowed.

And if they put Shinji and Rei up there, the least they could do was include Asuka aswell. She's just such a wonderfully protagonistic *****.

Naruto better than Light Yagami? Goku better than L beaten by mother****ing PIKACHU?! The only ones I agree with is Rei Ayanami and Edward Elrics's positions. if I were to make a list of the best anime characters, they'd be at those spots.

Useless list. Goku as first alone is enough for the list to be bad. Luffy shouldn't be 22nd. Allen Walker isn't anywhere on it. The only person in a good spot is Spike, even though he is far far better then the top 3.
You think Spike was more influential than Astro Boy? Seriously?

On a note I forgot by the way: It's clear that IGN's list isn't Japanese based, otherwise it'd simply have RX-78-2 in all 25 slots.
From what I've heard from plenty of people, Cowboy Bebop got them into anime.

Spike should have won that. As classic as Astro boy is, Spike has converted more people into Anime fans (myself included) than any others.

Hmm... not a single character from the Gundam series. Well, I guess the giant robots were always more interesting than any of the actual characters from those shows anyway.

At least Spike Spiegel made the cut.

And Sailor Moon, I'm really happy for you, and Im'a let you finish, but Mahou Shoujou Lyrical Nanoha was the most awesome magical girl anime ever!

Astro Boy was the first anime. I'm pretty sure that trumps "Got my friend Dan into anime."

Goku higher than Astro Boy? Really?

And where the hell is Light?
#18.

I gotta wonder how many people read the judging criteria before posting.

My guess is not many.

Most the characters I'm familiar got on the list and hell I was happy to see Haruhi though I would of liked to see Kyon up there for all the crap he goes through for her.

In a sense a list like this is always going to start a flame war, so it does seem sensible for IGN to just pick a grab-bag of well known characters for damage control. That said, it does kind of annoy me there seems no kind logic here. Although Goku would be nowhere near my top 25 favourite characters on the basis of having the depth of a paper plate, I can easily accept his top spot in that nearly every protagonist of shonen (i.e. big money)since DB has been patterned on him. But then why have the deriatives in Naruto, Luffy and ichigo show up as well? Surely in a list of influential characters needs Amuro and Char on there? It just... gah. It's an awful, awful awful list, not because I disagree with it, but because there is on basis on which to disagree with it. Its completely arbitrary.

#10 Rei
Uninteresting character laden with angst. It might just be because of my hatred for angst, but I really don't understand the appeal of NGE at all. But that's a topic for another time. Cut her. Crap, I was suppose to throw a flame warning in here... ah well, bring the hate NGE lovers.
To reitterate, this is a "Top characters" list for me. Not a "Most influentia anime series" or "most popular characters" or anything like that. "Top Characters" = "Best Characters" ... in my humble opinion.
But why bother when this is the kind of response you get? Just like everyone else on the internet, your opinion itself is of no interest to me or anyone. The reasons why you hold your opinion may be. The only thing I know about your metric of quality is you don't like angst-ridden characters. Real helpful. If you state what you think is good or bad without justification then state that so and so is "the best" or "the worst" you A: contribute nothing to the discussion and B: come across as self centred for confusing subjective opinion with some objective metric of quality.

Well taking into account "effect on the anime scene", I suppose I can understand why Goku and Naruto rated so high when their characterisation is shit.
Even then, Luffy should be above Naruto. One Piece is much more influential as a show than Naruto, despite it's low profile in America. Naruto and Bleach might be more influential on the scene in the english speaking world, but that doesn't feed back into anime itself in a major way. If you included influence in manga, you couldn't possibly argue for him being lower than the top two, because One Piece is the first series to actually cause Shonen Jump sales to increase since Dragonball ended.

In terms of influence on the medium and characterisation, I'd say there's a good argument for having Luffy at the top, because he's not a boring invincible brick like Goku, who doesn't even stop when he's dead (the same problem as Superman, basically).

Also, there are no giant robot shows on the list other than Eva. No Char, no Amuro, no Roy Fokker (who even in America is generally remembered as the first person people ever saw die in a cartoon, like a more badass version of Bambi's mother, not influential or a good character?), no Gundam characters at all. I mean fucking seriously, a list supposedly based on characterisation and influence within the medium and there is no Gundam?.

This is obviously a list compiled by idiots.

*Shrug* Only ones I recognize are Goku, Vegeta, and Ruroni Kenshin so I suppose I shouldn't comment... but Goku is pretty awesome. Yeah.

No argument on the lack of Gundam. It's extremely suspect that not a single character from any of the dozens of Gundam series made it into that list at all, but it's not my list anyway. It's like having a top 25 movie villains of all time list without putting Darth Vader in there.

As for Luffy against the likes of Naruto and Ichigo - you have to remember that Lasting Fame was also a criteria. While One Piece is popular (and there is no doubt about that), I feel that both Bleach and Naruto are still far more publicised and 'famous' than One Piece are. I'm not saying you're wrong, just offering possible insights into why IGN chose to go the way they did.

Not seen Totoro so I can't really comment on it but I think there's just him and Haruhi who aren't in shonen (genre not magazine) anime.

Granted, Shonen anime is popular, but they could've explored the full range more and found many more fitting characters.

Of the criteria listed, I think the only one IGN actually followed was how much these characters have influenced their genres, because I'll be damned if I'm gonna listen to someone say to me, with a straight face, that Pikachu has good quality characterization.

No Gundam pilots? Out of all the series, not one made it in? I like the Vegeta and Goku pics though.

This list is pretty well.....Americanized if you ask me.

There is no way that Alucard from Hellsing Ultimate COULDNT be in the top 5 of that list.

like wtf, I'm down for Goku as being number 1, I mean he's clearly the strongest being in the universe, UNLESS you go with Akira Toriyama's original idea in which case Gohan is the strongest being in the universe.

But some of these characters are just total shit. Like Pikachu? wtf, pikachu is the most shit character in the history of animation.

In the English speaking world.

In Japan they're also-rans.
