This poll is basically is about Our very own Gavin Dunne, AKA Miracle Of Sound. I'm a big fan of his music, and Have Illegally Downloaded all of his songs (For the very large member of people on this site who didn't read the full OP, THIS WAS A JOKE it does in fact say that if you illiterates had read it before spamming me with OMFG pirate messages) And I'm personally of the opinion that the world needs more artists like him; more spcifically, his adaptability.
Unlike most modern artists, He doesn't write the same song 24 times and call it an album. He changes his style, constantly through the neccessity of matching it to the weeks game or more recently films (Side note: Wheres a spiderman song Gav? Batman has like 3, come on).
Some may argue that writing songs about games means he isn't a proper artist. Fuck those guys, inspiration can come from anywhere, be it books, films, or indeed videogames.

I'd like to see more artists like Gav pop up and have gav himself heard by a far wider audience so people A) know who I'm fanboying over and B) slowly develop a better taste in music.

I feel I should also point out that I haven't actually pirated any of MOS' songs, because MI6 will totally come for me in the night and bring all of their FBI buddies with them.... Humour is dangerous....

I agree that he should get more mainstream attention but there's so many things that have to happen for him to be found and then if he's picked up by a record company we can't keep him for ourselves. If he is "discovered" then I wish him all the best but I'm happy that he's doing well right here.

Why would you admit to doing that?

Why?

OT: I made Dunne everything he is today.

He may tell you otherwise, but don't listen to him.

>_>

<_<

[sub]I like his songs, they make me smile.[/sub]

I actually have 'Fight like a Krogan' as my ringtone :D

My appreciation Gavin Dunne'a work is a lot like my appreciation of Loreena McKennitt's, and just as chance discovered.

I fell in love with Loreena McKennitt's music after a chance hearing of "The Lady of Shalot" on NPR. The only reason I learned who had made that amazing song was because I called up the music station and asked them. Then I bought her CD.

If I hadn't gotten introduced to Yahtzee's "Halo Wars" episode by a nephew I'd never have discovered the Escapist or any of the artists and creators here.

Gavin Dunne falls into the category that most musicians do--unknown by the general public. If your work isn't being blasted on local rock or country stations at least 90% of the U.S. probably will never have heard of you.

Broadway can result in exceptions, sure, as can other venues.

I can't see most of the public getting behind much of his work, though some songs like "Little Sister" and the one about Commander Shepard are catchy enough to entertain. They're written for a niche crowd, is all.

The problem with Gavin reaching a mainstream crowd would be similar to the problems Scott Pilgrim had; a combination of too many niches to sell well to the general public.

It would be awesome if people like Gavin got more attention but I think it's gonna be a while before that happens since his stuff, and others like it, is in a niche little area. It might be lost on a greater audience, but who knows? That might change.

Also, why would you admit to pirating his music on a site that hosts it?

Rather ballsy of you to do that, and not classy at all.

I don't ever, ever want to hear music about video games so I have no interest in him, but he seems to be talented.

I will complain about one thing though.

To me, this is a downside. I really do believe that a true artist has a "style" that they develop and fine-tune. To me, being able to just switch between a hundred different styles on cue speaks less to an artist's talent and more to their ability to imitate a bunch of different techniques and approaches without really investing in or developing one. It's like writers who can write children's books and then write mystery novels and then write cookbooks; more often then not, they do it by just switching into "generic mystery novel mode" or "standard children's book pastiche mode" instead of really developing and exploiting one medium.

I'm not necessarily saying that such is the case here, but I do think that "does a lot of different styles" is actually quite a drawback unless the person in question is ridiculously multi-talented.

Generally speaking, a good artist is (not by definition, but as a result) on the large scale unpopular. I don't mean that people hate the artist, but rather only appeals to a small crowd of people.

(there can of course be bad artists who only connect to a few people)

As highly as I regard his music, the fact that it's mostly about video-games probably makes it far too niche to picked up by a normal music publisher. Plus, I think he's said himself that the fact he likes to use and experiment with different styles makes him a little less marketable.

Basically, I think he's great, but probably not what publishers are looking for. My guess is that he would likely be passed over in favour of a more "standard" musician.

He will be entered into official charts if his stuff is on iTunes or can be purchased on a CD from places. Since it's a niche market it probably won't generate anywhere near the same amount of downloads, purchases and plays as the current top 10 will.

I want to like his stuff, but I find his songs uninteresting. If he can sell his music, more power to him. I wish him no ill will. But unless he's selling his stuff, he shouldn't be on the charts.

Well, you're not exactly helping him get into the charts by illegally downloading his songs now, are you?

I remember him before he had the music and he was just the guy with the Soundwave avatar to me, those where the days...

Although it would be lovely to see something geeky getting larger appreciation by chart recognition that also inevitably leads to outcries of "OMGZ YOU NOT A REAL NERD STOP PRETENDING BY LISTENING TO THE FUCKING SONG". You know, because we are lovely people.

Anyhoo time to find out who Malukah Fenix is...

Who says that for him to be accepted into the music charts that he would need to be signed by a record company? It would make things a heck of a lot easier but it is hardly necessary.

And to be honest, who besides record companies really pays attention to the music charts anyway?
