When I was a mite, I was scared of the 1950s War of the World film. I loved the martian spaceships, but the idea that the fucking things might come crashing down into the field behind my house and invade my home kept me up for weeks afterwards.

Yeah, this has happened to me off and on throughout my life, because I can't stay away from horror stories and movies (love Poe, Lovecraft, It!, etc.). I love the adrenaline rush of getting absorbed by a really good psychological thriller. Anyway, what usually works for me is to put on a happy or funny movie that I've seen a lot of times before and let that distract enough of my attention to let me sleep.

Other than that, try talking to a Psych if it's causing sleep deprivation.

Get exhausted during the day by excercising or something.

OD on caffiene, drink your caffiene of choice about 2 or 3 hours before you wanna go to sleep and then wait for the crash(takes a lot more then you would normally drink and after that just water)

Say an action movie quote that makes you feel like a badass when you hear a strange noise.

And because i can't help myself, exchange super bowl tickets for some balls on craig's list.(at least one person should get this)

Don't feel bad, I'm 18 and I still have to look around when I'm in my dark creepy basement. Though, you shouldn't lose sleep over it. Easier said than done, I learned how to be apathetic, and that helps me. It's so great to not care about anything, really helps your fears.

This sounds really serious. My advice would be to talk to a counselor, and avoid pills.
That shit must be scary....

That's the thing man. It's mad. I know it's made up and everything, but I'm a proper weak sod when it comes to stuff that requires your mind to fill in the blanks. The unknown. The "catching-something-in-the-corner-of-your-eye-through-the-window" stuff makes my heart stop.

Need help sleeping?Get a teaspoon, warm milk, advil PM,then throw all that stuff away and smack yourself with a brick on the leg,not a concrete brick, but something thick to cause your arm or leg(NOT HEAD,DON'T SMACK YOUR HEAD.) to go numb and get your mind off this, and this is more effective than sleep medicine.TRUST ME.

You sound just like me. I had trouble sleeping after watching the fucking Matrix (though I was like, nine). Agent Smith kept coming at me... Do you have any pets to cuddle with? That usually helps...
They way I deal with the unknown is thus: I don't know it, no one else knows it, and no one can know it, therefore I am not meant to know it. That really just helps me... ignore it.
Crying yourself to sleep helps too. I've done it.
[sub]this thread is getting uncomfortably personal[/sub]

Yea... i picked the grow up option because, well yea.

I guess everyones different. My head tumbles over all sorts of crap and i often go to bed an hour earlier than i ought to just so i can sort through it all and still get some sleep. I've spent 6 hours awake in my bed trying to sleep but my f'ing brain never stfu... ever cursed your own brain... now thats not healthy.

I think you ought to avoid scary movies, pictures, games, stories, and houses... it will serve you well.
Would you guess my favourite genre is survival horror?

I can deal with zombie movies, blood and guts, alien movies, even ghost movies to an extent. My main weakness is suggestive horror. Psychological taunts that fuck me over in the head and leave me chilled for days.
I know what you mean. Psychological horror and those other kinds that you mentioned shouldn't even be in the same genre. Play Dead Space and Silent Hill 2 and tell me they belong on the same shelf (not degrading either's quality, just their similarity).

Anyway, I've never been quite so scared as that, but I have been scared enough to sort of get where you're coming from. For me, however, I can usually just get over it by purposely thinking of other things and berating myself (no joke), so I guess I'm not much help, sorry.

Just associate it with something stupid. For example, it's hard to be scared of the Slender Man when you immediately think of Wilt from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends

Hey don't worry, I'm scared of sleep itself, let me explain myself. You know how when you finally get to sleep you've been thinking and suddenly it all fizzes out? For me I always think that that is an experience close to death and considering I think too much that's just a one-way ticket to insomnia.

I don't know about that, man. I've never seen this "Wilt" character before, but if I encountered him in a dark room I'd sure be scared shitless. I'm just saying--he genuinely looks freaky-scary to me!

Urgh. Lets just say I can never leave the TV on with static. Ever, ever, ever again. Also, never walking through the park on my own. Or a forest. Or a garden.
