Poll: Immortality, with a price.

I dont like kids, and i could accomplish so much more if i was immotal. The proble, with this would be that if every one took the immortal option humanity would no longer be able to reproduce, and if there ever was a war, intergalactic or otherwise, we would be screwed. A great plague would compleatly destroy us. There would have to be a system to make sure we could still reproduce, just incase.

It's not quite what I'd call immortality, and it sounds like you mean on a population wide scale of availability (not just me personally). So I would have to answer: no. It's part of a species' strength to be able to adapt and change. The old teach the new how to avoid their mistakes. I don't know that we can account for all the ramifications for completely scratching the tried and true birth & death population mechanics. Are we mentally prepared to live forever, barring any death or injury from something outside our own body? I think that the overturning of our generations grants some advantages that we take for granted such as the influx of fresh, new ideas.

However, were this a "genie in a bottle wish," I think that I would take it. I'm curious to see what happens after my time to humanity. It's a double standard, which makes me uncomfortable, but given the circumstances of each, I think my answers are understandable.

So what is the escapists opinion? Would you consider becoming immortal, even if it meant you could not raise a child?

I need some more info before I agree to this like, does accepting mean I have to engage in regular sword duels with other immortals?

Bear the child first, then become immortal. that way, I can leave the child and the mother WITH A TRUSTED FRIEND WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF THEM, and send them anything Ican to support the child. The family line continues, I live forever, and will have an indirect part in all the later generations that my child will bear.

Its highly possible any child i could sire would suffer horribly from the genetic disease that runs in my family, yeah id take that sterilization to live forever, hell eventually they might figure out the kind that makes you unkillable

I would take the deal, however, I would ask that the sterilization procedure not be done and that I instead be place under strict supervision. If too many people become immortal and are unable to reproduce, and many of them die in crimes or wars, then we are going to need to reproduce to get the population back, and if immortals are the ones that survive, we are screwed.

Hence, either no sterilization treatment, just strict monitoring, or a fully and easily reversible sterilization treatment that I know, and have the equipment to, perform if need be, but once again, I am under strict monitoring.

If the answer was no, I would ask if I could deposit sperm in a sperm bank for if the need ever arose, and take the treatment regardless of the answer.

I have no need to have children and honestly, I would not want any until the world is a better place for them.

Personally, I would be for mandatory age limits. Generational differences are what have allowed the species as a whole to evolve. I shudder to think of a world where we do not continue to have evolving ideas and values. Having immortality would lead to stagnation.

Yes. YES, definitely yes. The idea of raising children terrifies me anyways. And longevity with the ability to be killed by sufficient trauma is probably better in the long run, since you would avoid things like outliving the world and drifting through the infinite void of space.

This is a no-brainer - Worst thing would be being immortal and HAVING to watch your children/family grow old and die. Plus there is always adoption and IVF.
