A good mouse helps indefinitely for me, I have a G5 v2. I love it, the extra buttons on it are really useful and its perfect for me at 2000 dpi. Its also feels good in my hand, doesn't give my hand cramps. The type of mouse you use depends on your grip, I use claw. Certain mice are better for certain people.

As for keyboards, I used to think that they didn't matter. However I found that my keyboard wouldn't respond when I was pressing another button. It happened that it was "W" and "D" and my keyboard. So i got a fairly nice nice keyboard to play with now, Ideazon Merc. Though on reflection I probably would have been better off getting a seperate gamepad. Like the G13 or Fang or something, good for FPSs.

Also, use a mouse pad. Its much nicer to wear a spot into a plastic or metal sheet then to wear through the paint or veneer on your desk. I have a 4 inch circle where that happened. Currently I have a Razer eXactMat, anodized aluminum, with a wrist pad, thing.

They're not really worth spending a hundred dollars on, a stock keyboard is fine. The mouse, however, is different. I can't stand non-optical mice. I have an Intellimouse, cost 30 bucks which is a great deal, and I can't live without one. The lack of side buttons, the mouse wheel, and the optical laser kills me if I try to use a mouse without them. The only thing I wish they would add is the ability to use the mouse wheel to scroll left and right, in addition to up and down. They also seem to be really responsive, sometimes a little too responsive if they get some dirt in front of the laser it'll change your view from looking at the door in front of you to looking at the ceiling behind you, but it's not a huge issue.

For the ultimate keyboard, I give you the Optimus Maximus

You don't quite see very well in the pics, but its a keyboard used in standard fashion, only every key is an OLED screen, EVERY KEY IS A SCREEN. YOU. PRESS. THEM.

I want one.

Keyboards don't really worry me that much but I need a mouse that works properly or I'm done for on games like CSS and stuff. Wouldn't spend much money on either though as long as they work fairly well its fine by me.

Over all it depends on what games you play, having a decent mouse will give you that edge you need and a gaming keyboard is also pretty helpful.
How specifically does a gaming keyboard help you?

Looks like a great status prop for an IT manager's desk.
Unfortunately, as far as actual keyboarding goes, it's a mess. Lebedev says the keypress is up to 70 grams, which is nuts. Confirmed by various review sites in practice.

Unless you're really into your HARDCORE! gaming, I wouldn't bother spending much money on a keyboard and mouse. While mouse and keyboard is important (I really suck at console FPSes), the ones that came with the computer get the job done more often than not. That's what I do.

I remember an old mouse I had. It was big, but you just sat the ball in there and rolled. Really good for games because of how fast you could whip around.

Who cares about practicality when the keyboard is a screen, its the age old Ferrari argument.

You can't use it daily, but who cares?, ITS A FUCKING FERRARI.
