I like in-ear headphones - I find that even using normal headphones hurts after a while so I don't count that as a negative. The main reason I like ear-buds is I can keep the volume low and still not get background noise from my surroundings. Also at work I have to wear ear-bur ear protectors for about 8hrs a day so I'm kinda used to it now.

I prefer regular, Ipod type headphones, in my case a pair of Sennheiser MX400's. Buying those plug like in-ear one's would be too dangerous for me, yes blocking noise out is good most of the times, but not when you have to bike over a busy road. I rather hear cars coming thank you very much.

I never had problems with the inner ear ones. They blocked out more of the outside world, allowing me to turn the volume down to something a little kinder on the old drums. I suppose if your ears are filthy, but then again, science says that cleaning your ears is like pouring crude oil on Satan while he's having a lavabath.
can you provide a link to the journal article that says that? I'd be quite interested to read it... :S

The in ear headphone get very annoying they fall out alot and may cause damage for you're ears if they're sensitive since you have to shive them deep in you're ear to keep them from falling out. I usually use the hesh Headphones from skull candies

Clip-ons. They don't damage your ear.

Too bad my old ones failed me after 4 years...

I like the ine ear ones. The big over ear ones are just too big to walk around with, while the smaller ones that hand in the outer part of the ear makes a lot of noise for the people around me, while they make the quality of the music much worse, often not letting me hear the bass.

I prefer out of ear, but they often make more noise for other people. I use standard iPod ones when in public otherwise I have big beefy out-of-ear ones.

Ear buds are the way to go. Sony makes a pair that cost around fifty dollars that are best in class in my humble opinion.

For exercise, go for in-ear. They never fall out and they give excellent sound quality.

I actually use a set of noise-cancelling uber-headphones, but not for exercise.

I had a pair that were older than me. They were huge, and I had to buy a special attachment so they could fit my various MP3 players. They were awesome.

I use ones that go in your ear, but mold to your ear size, unlike the normal iPod ones, which forcibly push your ear canal open.

I am not happy unless I have big, cushy, over-the-ear headphones.
I have delicate ears.

In ear ones, since out of ear headphones press against my eyeglasses in such a way that it hurts me.

I got some standard design earphones made by Olympus a little while ago and I've found them to be the best earphones I've ever had. Kicked the ass clean off any in-ear or out-of-ear sets I've come across in the past.

I dislike the in-ears, since i always tend to get earwax in them (gross, i know). And i hate cleaning the inside of my ear (;
That's why i use some normal Sennheiser headphones :p
But the sound quality in the in-ear ones are better, and i also like to be 'excluded' from the rest of the world, when i listen to my music.
