Yeah, I find that tends to happen as well. The best laid plans just fall apart and I end up distributing most of the bed coverings around the room and sleeping like a prawn in a tiny fort. Or maybe on my arm, which does not thank me for it the next day. I usually have to smack the thing against a wall to get the feeling back into it. Ergh.
Ive been known on multiple occasions to wake up with the tail end of my bed covers at my head. Almost as if ive rotated my bed covers 180 degrees in my sleep

I usually lie sort of on my belly but on my side. I can pretty much sleep anywhere except sitting up. If im not vertical I cant sleep

I used to sleep on my back but then I read that sleeping on your side is actually better for your back (your spine is more align evenly compared to your back).

I tend to sleep on my right side, in the foetal position. I find sleeping in any other position rather uncomfortable.

Curled up on one of my sides, usually.

Oddly, simply reversing the position from one side to another isn't as comfortable.
You're not on your own there; I find the most comfortable sleeping position to be my left side, yet sleeping on my right feels so odd and weird. So yeah I start on my left side and then usually I wake up on my back. As others have said, my body must naturally do it to avoid waking up with a dead arm.

I usually start off on my back or sides, but years of sleeping on my belly have made it the only truly comfortable position for me to sleep in.
