The Thirty Year's War. This period was was a time of a true arms race between the countries of Europe. Cannons and firearms were becoming more streamlined for practical battlefield use.
AKA The Holy Roman Empire's Really Bad Day. The bulk of the war took place within the lands that would one day become known as Germany. The populace dealt with soldiers raiding their towns and villages for no other reason than to pillage or find supplies for their own sake.

This could also become a time when the middle-eastern and european bloodlines of Desmond's ancestry could converge, featuring two assassins in the storyline working to the same ends.

1789-1815. Start with the French Revolution and run all the way through the Napoleonic Wars. It has everything: Ubisoft could take in Paris, London, Vienna and Moscow; famous historical figures are there in abundance (from military leaders like Wellington and Napoleon, to poets such as Byron or Wordsworth, to politicians like Robespierre or Pitt, to Kings and Emperors and Tsars...); it has a unique style all of its own (some of the battle bling from back then is amazing) which could take in clothing, buildings, anything.

Most importantly, it deals with the themes that AC likes: freedom and liberty against despotism and tyranny, with enough murk thrown in to make for a really interesting story.

I swear, people who voted Classics just want some upskirts. I assume hiding your testicles was never a small feat in those Greek miniskirts.
On the subject of skirts, I'm changin' my vote to the Georgian era. Women wearing absolutely massive skirts and petticoats? Mobile hiding places, anyone?
Would be best in first person perspective... ;)

I voted Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt etc. But I actually want AC3 to focus on Desmond. Although, after Desmond's story is over, there's no reason why Ubisoft couldn't make AC game set entirely in the past, without the animus. There is a lot of cool time periods they haven't explored yet.

There was a rumor that the third one will be based in the Civil War. That seems to work.

I was hoping for a game set in the U.S. Revolution, possibly even with a female assassin (just to screw with Desmond).

do a 50/50 split. With desmond doing all the boring, parjour scenes he did in the last one and being a complete emotional and wreck because he killed whatever her name is. then having his ancestor in a totally cool time period with them kicking ass and having cheesy one-liners

I definitely think the Russian Revolution would be the best setting. Though I would hate to see the series move away from swordplay.

The Napoleonic wars in Russia, beaten by the cold? Yeah, sure. Anyone who's read Twelve by Jasper Kent will know exactly why.

They seriously need to drop the whole Desmond/Animus angle.
Just say fuck it and start an offspin series where templars and assassins battle each other in different timezones.

Like somehow get Altair warped into the present where he continues to assassinate political targets with poisoned blades and throwing stars.

Russian revolution.

I WANT TO ASSASSINATE RAUSPUTIN!

There was a comic set in the time period!

Apparently, it's going to be a Desmond-centric installment... I think.

Anyway, seeing as how most of the targets were historical figures and most died around the times portrayed, it'd have to be one that had a swathe of political figures killed in quick succession. I'm thinking Rome (transition from Republic to Empire being the best era).

However, seeing as how there's a sort of chronological progression (Crusades, Renaissance, modern), the main period with a great deal of political upheaval is pre-WWI, and completely fictionalise the feats of Danilo Ilic, or rather, one of his underlings. That'd be kinda funky.

EDIT:

Holy shit... good point, but not enough viable assassination targets, I don't think.
I always thought the russian theme from the comic would of been a nice change of locale for the series.

Such as russia

or Egypt

Well I think the franchise has been slowly moving forwards so doing things that are before the first are out since what would this assassin know that Ezio and Altaïr didn't already know. I'd say either end the series by showing the ending through Desmond. Or if you were going to keep going... how about a time of war where espionage was big, in a place you could greatly use the parcour aspects, like... Europe.

IN TEH FUTURE!!!11!one!!!

Seriously the future would be awesome, it could be like Deus Ex but with a much bigger stealth focus. It could also have sort of a Kill Bill vibe where everyone fights with swords even though its the future.
No, Assassin's Creed is appealing because it's set in the past where stabbing people is more viable, if you just go all Desmond you just amplified the worst part of the series.

Ok ok stabbing people isn't viable in any time period because real life assassins just stalk people for a while, find a pattern then say the guy goes to the same coffee shop everyday, they go to work for the shop, put poison in it or something else that might make him die of natural causes, then give it to him and kill him. If you just go in broad daylight and stab someone, or hell even in night and you stab someone they're going to suspect someone did it, and they could potentially track you down and embarrass the whole organization.

I'd like there to be an Assassin's Creed game to be set in FUTURE JAPAN!!! That or maybe steampunk because I like those :3 It doesn't even have to tie into the story, but maybe make up a whole new plot for it (without forgetting about the other REAL Assassin's Creed games of course) Or maybe something more likely to happen, Asia!!! >:3 Somewhere in ancient Asia. Goddammit how come every time us Chinese put up a wall, stupid Mongolians have to come and knock it down!

Assassins creed: Ankh Morpork, would not fit in with the storyline whatsoever, but it would be pretty damn cool.

Where is modern day? Desmond is placed into the body of Ubisoft assassin extraordinaire: Sam Fisher
