Halo Reach for two main reasons:

A) You play as your own Spartan. I don't dislike John and Cortana but I liked being able to play as my own person, wearing pink armor from beginning to end.

B) NO. FREAKING. FLOOD. I seriously hate the flood, I hate their levels and, I hate all of their forms. I was ecstatic to find out they weren't a part of Reach.

I loved ODST...

The whole setting was amazing. There were quite a few annoyances yeah, but it's still my favourite.
It also had, by far, the best soundtrack...

Behind that, Reach and 2 tie.

Halo CE. Mainly because it had the OVERPOWERED MAGNUM PISTOL OF DOOM. God I loved that thing.

CE will always be the best. I've never played Halo 2 for various reasons, but out of all the others, 3 is probably the worst.

Halo CE, fond memories of playing that game over and over, and it being so fresh.
Followed by Halo 3.

Combat Evolved. Still has both my favorite storyline and favorite character personalities of the entire halo series, or the shooter genre in general. John and Cortana had nice little back-and-forths and it was nice in the middle of this dark epic world. Plus the God Pistol of Infinity +1. Second would have to be Reach. 2nd best story, single best character customizer, and some of the funner weapons ^^ Plus, armor powers.

Personally Reach. I just like alot of stuff that Bungie put in, such as more armor customization and the awesome weapon that is the Grenade Launcher :D.

But the one with the best soundtrack would probably be 2, with ODST as a close second.

You know what, despite CE being the genesis of Halo and ODST being a cracking piece of gaming, I'm going to say Reach is so far the best. It combines the good stuff of CE, the good stuff of 3 and throws in its own good stuff just to top it off. I was very surprised and impressed with it, though I still wouldn't hold it as "t3h b3zt g4me evar!".

Feel free to try and convince me otherwise.

No, 2 was the worst. The worst by far. You have not missed anything by not playing it.

EDIT: Of course CE is the best. WHY HAVE I SOLD MY SOUL TO THE POLL DEVIL?!

ODST without a doubt. Great cast, great story, great atmosphere, great balance, great game.

I also really liked how they built all of the standard videogame level tropes into the story so well. Typically it feels a little forced how you just happen to be in a "vehicle level" or a "sniper level" or a "stealth level". They might fit into the story, but it often feels a little too convenient. I feel like ODST did a really nice job of using the specialised squadmates to lend some weight and reasoning to structuring the game with specialised levels like that.

And I also thought they managed to do the overworld mission hub thing really well with you looking for the remains of your squadmates' battles. It was an elegant way to do a mission hub again without it seeming too artificial or forced.

But most of all, the voice cast (i.e. the cast of Firefly) was great and the darker atmosphere was very welcome. The fact that it wasn't about MC and wasn't part of such a giant, epic story also helped make the more impressive skirmishes that you actually take place in seem that much neater - it didn't feel like a lot of the game was just filler between larger, bigger, cooler battles.

Reach was also very, very good. I think it was a really nice blend of the things that worked in ODST and the characters and themes of the main trilogy. And it had some damn impressive set pieces. My only real complaint was that I wished I could fly around that fighter in space more!

I'd really like to say "the one that ripped off Aliens," but I don't know if I'd get a single response from a good-humored person who realizes that it was a light-hearted joke. So, instead, I'll say: the one that had more varied gameplay and epic boss battles and better interaction with NPCs who actually knew how to drive a vehicle like a human fucking being. That one :p

Relax, Halo fans, I enjoy the franchise.

That's one of the reasons I've never played it.

I'm sure it would go 2-3-ODST-Reach-CE for me if I did.

Halo CE, by virtue of having a self contained conflict that it bothers resolving at a good pace.

Pretty much what this guy/girl said, though I didn't see a mention of the fantastic soundtrack in there...

What hooked me on ODST was the fact that it wasn't overly dramatic or overindulgent. The Halo universe is a pretty neat one, and I was very happy to see it from a different point of view for a change. It had a whole different vibe to it since you were no longer ye olde supersoldier; doubly so since you were playing a lone trooper in a near-abandoned metropolis at night. In most cases, this would be an eerie setting, but the soundtrack and ambience made the experience more enchanting than anything.

Personally, charm > adrenaline, and ODST was rife with charm. I don't expect this to be the popular opinion, but you know what? I'm OK with that.

That pretty much reflects my own opinion. The story in 2 is about the only thing that makes it worth playing imo...just. I was severely disappointed in its length, as well as its engine that the console just couldn't keep up with, the more finicky controls on the Warthog, the licensed music (wtf Bungie?) the lack of the AR, majorly nerfed pistol...I could go on, but I don't want to crap up the thread.

Not counting Halo Wars of course, despite it being a great RTS, it doesn't fit here.
