Exactly the same thing I do. While I keep my ad-blocking software and hardware off in places like this, I now block whatever I can on Blip because they really like to spam the ads. The nag screen at least gives me the silence to listen to some music while I wait, but I really hate those obtrusive video ads. They make me want to knife their creators in the throat. Banner ads don't bother me as long as they're not too obtrusive, but video ads bother the hell out of me and often turn me away from the products and services being peddled.emillyorr said:I think that's my main problem, actually. Normally, I run Adblock, and while there are sites I will pause or disable Adblock for--because they're predominantly counting on banner ads and suchlike to survive--the Blip ads are just surreal. If Adblock is on: 90 seconds of nag screen. If Adblock is off, it's three ads in a row, with anywhere from 30 seconds to one full *minute* of screen time per each one, which means it's actually *less* annoying to be nagged by a text screen than deal with three ads.
If I'm watching something that's half an hour or longer, I can grit my teeth, but if I'm watching something that's only five or ten minutes long, my getting three one-minute ads for a phone I don't want, a store I'm never going to, or a clothing line I'd never consider is excessive and irritating.
No, he pretty much was asking people to let the ads play so he could keep his job. He was fairly up front, which I ultimately appreciate. CA folks have also been fairly candid for the reason of more money from more ads, so it's not a self-multiplying issue.bug_of_war said:I recall Linkara's video he put out somewhat recently addressing people using addblockers, and basically what he was saying is they're putting in more ads because more people are using ad blockers.
I'm not sure what you're talking about, as this is nothing I've said. As such, I'm loathe to comment on most of this statement, but....Now, as for the whole, "We don't like doing it but Blip makes us do it" I call bullshit.
But if they're stuck in a contract, there is nothing they can do about it.If they're stuck in a contract, say so, but don't just pretend that there's nothing that you can do about it.

I should have been more specific, yes most of the video was him asking people to allow the ads to play, but there was that one section where he mentioned why there was an increase in ads. So yeah, my fault for using a blanket term for the video when the video was addressing multiple issues.Zachary Amaranth said:No, he pretty much was asking people to let the ads play so he could keep his job. What you're referencing is when he mentions the repetitiveness of ads, which happens specifically because most ad groups don't rust online advertising, which IS a self-propagating issue.

What I wrote was not anything that you said, it's what the members of TGWTG have stated a few times. I can't for the life of me remember the videos in which it was stated, but they have at times said they have issues with the video player they're using and it's advertisements.Zachary Amaranth said:I'm not sure what you're talking about, as this is nothing I've said. What I meant was don't say that you can't eventually switch over. Normally when you sign a contract it says that you have to use the video player for x amount of months/years, however it is still legal to opt out of the contract if you're unhappy with the services (though you most likely will have to pay a fee). It is also NOT illegal to tell people that you signed a contract with a company once the collaboration (I can't think of a better word) begins publicly. So yeah, they have no reason not to tell us that they've signed a contract with Blip, but there is things they can do about it. They can say they'll try and re-negotiate when the renewal happens, they can opt out of the contract if they're truly dissatisfied. I'm not saying they don't deserve money for what they're creating, I'm saying that they shouldn't play the innocent being oppressed when they clearly are not being oppressed.Zachary Amaranth said:But if they're stuck in a contract, there is nothing they can do about it.
I don't think you're fully understanding the things you're commenting on.
First of all, I don't believe that's how Blip works. I don't think there's any kind of legal contract involved. I also don't think they have any control over the ads or not, other than choosing whether or not to have them (well, I'm not even sure they control that).bug_of_war said:What I meant was don't say that you can't eventually switch over. I am a ninja, so it may have something to do with that, but I can pause Blip ads.Soviet Heavy said:If you are like me, I cannot stand Blip's ads, because you cannot pause them. Half the year, I am on a very slow internet connection, so I often let videos sit for a few minutes to buffer. Youtube Ads can be paused, allowing them to buffer so I get them over with. Blip ads? No such luck. They freeze up, stop loading, and then I have to refresh the page again and hope they don't play an ad the next time.
I know they can choose to have/place the ads in their videos, but that's all I know about Blip; And if what you're saying is true, than they really should just switch over to a different service. I'm not entirely sure what other streaming service they can use, but Spoony seems to be doing fine with Springboard (I think that's how it's spelt) and he uses that on his website so...Dr. Cakey said:First of all, I don't believe that's how Blip works. So what you're asking is for them to use a different video streaming service? Who? Youtube is out, for reasons that I hope are obvious. Dailymotion? Can you make revenue off Dailymotion videos?
EDIT: I believe Blip does not even require you to upload your videos exclusively on Blip. I know Spoony also puts his videos on his Youtube channel, for example.
I actually prefer the banner ads to the video ads, they are quite easily ignored and I wish more people would use them. Also, I've had experiences with TGWTG videos where during the middle advert they've played the same advert twice in a row so I can see why some people use ad blockers. I'M NOT CONDONING THAT MODERATORS. So yeah, I guess unlike you I'd prefer banner ads than video ads just because it's less of my time being wasted on things I'd rather not have time wasted on.Dr. Cakey said:I would like to thank Blip for introducing the 90-second nag screen, because it gave me the push I needed to whitelist AT4W, SFDebris, and other such folks. Banner ads playing during the video are vile and unacceptable, however, and the person who decided to implement those should suffer in some way completely disproportionate to their misdeed for the purposes of hyperbole.
That said...people seem to be having very different Blip experiences from me. I get one 30-second ad at the beginning and one in the middle (and one at the end, but somehow that doesn't bother me). That's it. And the damned banner ads, of course.
