I was talking to some friends about music and it seems like the music we heard as children had a big influence on what we listen today. I don't really mean so much as in the exact tracks (although 'The Eagles - Hotel California' is one of my favourites) but genre-wise. Is this the case with you?

Metal, DnB and Rock are the Genres I listened to most throughout my childhood because my parents loved that music.

I remember 6-7 years ago saying that I have no idea how my parents can listen to the stuff that they do. If you look at my playlists now at least 50% comes from my parents' collection...oh irony.

In part. When I was a kid my mother played the album Stars by Simply Red quite often. It's still my absolute favorite non-metal album.
Other than that she hasn't influenced me that much.

My dad loves the Kinks, I love the Kinks. Simple as that. I listen to a lot of classical rock my father likes.

Hmmm... Not really genre-wise, but certain bands just stuck.

For the entirety of my childhood, my dad listened to a few select Genesis albums that he loved above everything else he had ever heard. As a result, I am a big fan of Genesis nowadays, but it's far from my favorite music. (Peter Gabriel < Phil Collins, by the way.)

Also, about a year back I rediscovered an old album with pub songs, and found to my surprise that I knew the words to every song. Same as with the Genesis albums, dad had listened to this one a LOT while I grew up. As a result, I nowadays sing aloud everytime I'm drunk.. and in the mood.

As sad as it is, yes, as child my father would always have Arrow Classic Rock on on the radio, ergo I love everything from Nirvana to Zeppelin.

Everyone who says no and has the opposite taste of their parents, that still kinda is yes, by `rebelling´ and picking what your parents detest, you inherit the your parents´ negative or opposite taste.

My dad was a greaser, so he's responsible in part for my love of rockabilly.
Man I wish my dad was. Still I can't complain; if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have fallen in love with The Who, The Doors, The Beatles and The Stones.

When I was younger me and my siblings wouldn't clean to a cute little Barnie clean up song - no instead every Sunday my mother used to throw in an Aerosmith CD and hand us each a mop as we spent the entirety of the day cleaning the house. To this day I still enjoy the sound of Aerosmith to this day.

My dad's love of rock easily rubbed off on me as it's pretty much all I listen to and he still keeps up to date with it, hell i got Slash's solo album and Them Crooked Vultures' album from his collection.
As i say if it's got a guitar i'll pretty much listen to it.

But definetly NOT MY MUM. Her love for Cliff Richard and Elvis infuriated me more than anything. But im partial to the catchy rhythms of Shakira, plus dat ass.

There was a time I did, but my father listens to classic rock and I moved on to independent acts.

I inherited a few bands from my parents. Mostly my mom. In particular, the earliest music I heard that I both remember and loved was a mixtape featuring Electric Light Orchestra's "Time" when I was ten years old. Then my mom bought a "Best Of" CD for The Moody Blues, and then "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by The Alan Parsons Project when I was older. Those had the greatest impact on me.

Nowadays, I listen to near everything, but I always end up going back to classic rock/classic progressive when all is said and done.

My parents listened to varying genres of music, the most prominent being classical, folk-y and Frank Zappa (not really a genre, but just humour me).
My taste is quite eclectic and classical music and Frank Zappa have a special place in my heart (a lot of people my age 'hate' classical music, which is something I never understood).
So yeah. Inherited with a few new bits thrown in (techno, rap, metal, etc.)

Pink Floyd, The Dave Matthews Band, and real country music (Johnny Cash style) all came from my dad. I found everything else on my own.
