So I've been trying to expand my musical repertoire a bit as it seems approximately 75% of my library is Tuomas Holopianen (primarily nightwish, but also his solo album), game soundtracks (dark souls, which I rarely listen to, bastion, transistor, to the moon, as dark souls, mad world, metal gear rising: revengeance), a somewhat random assortment of metal (a song or 2 from a half dozen bands), and then some random songs I just happen to have (4 tops, cascada, backstreet boys etc.)

Anyway: I find that, while the song is good overall, I really really like the soft piano/strings/pipes/chorus bit (aren't I a master of diction?) in the first 5 ish minutes of this song.

Do you, my fellow escapists, know of anything similar to this I might look into? It's somewhat specific I know, but I really don't know what to call it so I've nary a clue where to begin.

I don't have much like that, but I know of at least one song that has the same feel. Even though it's not an instrumental, the vocals are really soft and match the tone perfectly.

Tell me what you think and I'll try to dig up some more from my collection. ;)

What you posted is distinctly modern in approach. Horn rips, rubato tempo, but mostly the timbre being fairly... unorthodox. You're probably looking for something that was synthesized, because the orchestra is kind of... stupid. Chorus, chimes, solo violin, harp, horns... is that an erhu? I'm not a music theorist, but the music also sound so bright and the melody seems so... safe. Baroque and Classical era had that style, but it wasn't until the last century when the instrumental arrangements got close to what you want.

The compositions with piano that I know of are a bit older than that, mostly being late 1800s to the early 1900s.

Here's something by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Very big name in piano, especially for difficulty to play. Has a sort of "dark" sound to the melodies. His piano concertos are his most popular works by far.

I honestly don't have much else for you. I'm not well versed on super-modern compositions, especially ones that likely would never be replayed by a live orchestra.

Far Cry 3 has my favourite I think:

It's light but somehow indescribably deep.

Here's a few more off the top of my head:

Just trying to get a little variety of styles here.

Just to get you started.

If instrumental music is what you want, allow me to give a few suggestions

Instrumental symphonic metal

More instrumental symphonic metal (with folk elements)

Symphonic/pagan metal, mostly instrumental. Their songs generally have vocals though.

If it's solely soft pianos and strings you're looking for, check this out

I think Sonata Arctica has some songs that would probably fufill that need.

Last Amazing Greys is also quite instrumental heavy

Edit: if you liked the LudoVico Song above I would probably say Divenire is his best.

This is good. It does have a similar but somewhat more... macabre? foreboding? feel to it, which is nice.

Thank you for your input, but yes I am looking for something more modern. That Rachmaninoff piece is lovely though. Now I can check one more classical piece I can cross off the list of "recognize, but can't name"

And, to be clear, I am looking for softer/more low key stuff. As much as I enjoy some symphonic metal, and as good as the music you all have posted is, I was hoping to diversify at least a little bit.

Also, Nujabes, a bit out of left field, but I like it. Thanks!

Here are some of my favs. I hope they're to your liking!

Most other instrumental artists I listen to are more rock-ish.

Damnit man! I was trying to hold off on buying tickets to that upcoming concert until I was certain I could actually get there.
Guess I gotta find a way to get to Columbus by February 25th.

Damn, I've been ninja'd! Got to think of something quick...

OT: Any of the SMT/Persona soundtracks...

Other than that, Fluid Minds (once they started getting more experimental) did some great instrumental tracks in my opinion...

I bet you could find some decent Evanescence covers that are primarily acoustic since they use piano is 93 percent of their songs anyway.

Uhmm.... this is hard for me. I don't usually listen to such... vivacious instrumentals.

For what it's worth though, the soundtrack to El Laberinto Del Fauno is really good. -crawls back from whence I came since I'm NO help in this thread after all-

Outside of this I would recommend the Guardians of the Galaxy OST. Especially Kyln Escape, The Final Fight Begins and Black Tears.

You might enjoy this. it's just two guys playing at a very high level live. Piano and guitar. A good chunk of this was also improvised on the spot as well. I find is very relaxing personally.

Probably a little less metal than some of the other stuff here. Both of these guys are usually into that but were just doing something off on their own away from Dream theater this one night.
