My biggest internet peeve right now is this damn CAPTCHA nonsense the Escapist is encumbering us with.

I can understand why it's irritating, but I prefer it to having to wade through spam to find anything relevant. I'm new(-ish) to this site so I don't really know if it's ever been much of a problem, but if it stops the spam I'm happy with it.

I've never seen any spam on this site ever and I lurked for about a year before I started posting. So that's no spam in 4 years. I honestly don't understand why they brought it in. The forums must account for a lot of their advertising wealth given the amount of posting, so why limit it?

Bad grammar always gets me... well not quite annoyed since I have the personality of a rock, but I find it distracting. Like if somebody says the wrong there/their/they're I'll always get confused for a moment before realising what's going on.

I can't understand the people who get genuinely angry at trolls though: they're (not 'there') great fun.

*ahem* but yeah, I get what you mean (grammar-wise). I tend to have the good courtesy to give my posts a cursory check to make sure it reads well. With some people (after checking what nationality they are) I can't help thinking: you're either a shit word-processor, or your English teacher deserves to be killed.

What annoys me is when people deliberately go off-topic, leading to a thread hijack. Dragging it back is nigh impossible, and you've got two or three twats talking about something completely inane or fatuous for 75%+ of the posts.

Oh, and some of the captchas. I totally get why they're there, but in 50%+ of cases, it's: how in fuck's name am I supposed to type that?! I don't have a Cyrillic keyboard...

I know what you mean. Some of them are incredibly vague.

Due to all the MLP/Brony hate I've changed 'BGH122' to 'My Little Pony/Bronies' (except now the poll is going insane and jumping about all over the place, ah well).

Op: I don't like it when people start arguments on threads that specifically request everyone to be civil(pipe dream I know). I also don't like it when people shit on others opinions 'cause theirs is different.

When you try and post something for a serious discussion, but it gets hijacked by whatever is popular at the moment. I.E ponies. For me its the same as what the person above said about Wapanese. I don't care about the ponies. If you do, I don't mind, just don't force feed it to me every time I want to talk on the forums.

They're trying to feed the glorious revolution.


It's the proselytising of the internet age.

I guess I just put up with it. It will pass. It is after all one of the few internet phenomenon I don't like.

I really dislike it when people can't write properly on the internet. Correct grammar and sentence structure is not difficult

My current peeve, as I've seen it a lot recently, is people using the phrase 'would of'. This is not a phrase. I can see where it's come from, but that does not make it any more valid. It should be 'would have' as it's obviously come from would've, which is shortened from 'would have'

Example : Let me look at the profiiile.. Oooh, you're English! Yea, come back when your arguement is valid, aka. ENGLISH IS YOUR SECOND LANGUAGE. I cant believe some people who make this arguement, sure if you went to school and learned english and proper grammar before the age of 13-14 when you start writing on the internet. Good-for-you. But if you are Polish and started learning English when you were 12. Aint exactly the same is it?

OT: People on the Escapist-forum (Or other Forums- But it is mainly here) who is hostile for no good reason. Some people should read through their post a second time before quoting. Example up there ^.

(No but seriously. Sometimes people get interrested in gaming websites and socialising over the internet before they learned perfect spelling and punctuation)

Excessive smilies and bad grammar/spelling irritates me too. This is exacerbated by the fact my spelling can be pretty atrocious, and I never exactly learned make grammar good.

It doesn't even have to be trolls, just people who're on my side of the argument and start fucking up my side of the argument by being moronic and making it look like everyone who agrees with my position must be a cretin.

Pretty sure that's a common tactic used to support one side of an argument. Like toned down sarcasm. Called "Fake Posting" or something.

I don't think I was being hostile. It peeves me, it's an incorrect use. True, it is harder to pick up on nuances like that when English is not your first language, but a lot of the time people who I see using 'would of' have English as a first language

Besides that, it was just a minor example, I realise that it isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it irks me. Overall, I don't really mind as long as people make logical sentences that don't require several readings to understand. The worst offenders for this, in my experience, are actually people who have English as a first language, people with English as a second language tend to make perfectly logical sentences as far as I've seen

Good point. A very good point. I'm sure that they had their reasons. It might be that they didn't want the site to get a reputation for being easy to spam. Who knows?
If the popularity of the site does grow (as I hope it is doing), then these precautions against spam would become necessary. Would you return to a site if, after visiting it for the first time, you had to wade through pages of spam?
I wouldn't, and would quickly be put off visiting this site if it became a problem. As I said, I'm more than willing to put up with it if it means I can get to relevant points easier.

Well, I'm not going to leave The Escapist after so many years, but if I were new to the site I'd have left already due to the CAPTCHA nonsense. There are plenty of discussion forums that don't impose such unnecessary irritations.

Awful spelling. Not typos mind you, for a lot of people, myself included, English isn't their first language so bad spelling happens. I mean people spelling words like "rite" or "cuz" etc.

Excessive fandom/cultism forming around games, movies etc. For example this new pony thing. I never saw a minute of that show, I got nothing against it but neither do I have the slightest desire to check it out yet being bombarded with pony pictures wherever I turn got old very quickly. In my case at least, the fandom has done a disservice to the show since I already have a bad image of the whole thingamajig without even disliking the concept itself.

Also 1024x768 signature pictures on forums that allow it. Especially if it's a fucking gif.

What irks me most about the internet are those who actually believe whatever they read on the internet. The Obama Birthers are a prime example - you can say anything about Obama and as long as it's derogatory, the Birthers and the Wing-nuts will automatically believe it, no matter how outlandish or nonsensical. The Left behaved the same way about George Bush. Too many people are so utterly willing to swallow lies about their political opponents, even when the lies are outrageous and have no backing.

Two cases in point: Obama's birth. Obama was clearly born in the US. Do you REALLY think that during the 08 presidential race, during his senate race, during his time has a law professor, NO ONE else checked on his birth? Do you really think that the ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY wouldn't have raised the issue DURING the 08 race? Do your really think that if there was ANY truth to the claim that Obama was born outside the US, that republicans in the NSA, CIA, FBI, ICE or pretty much any other government agency wouldn't have investigated it and proven it to be true? You're saying to me, that THE ENTIRE RESOURCES OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY COULDN'T UNCOVER THE FACT THAT OBAMA WASN'T AN AMERICAN, yet some HICKS down south managed to crack the case? If you think so, you're deluded. Straight up, you've been drinking some kool-aid there. Yet people on the internet believe the lies and the conspiracy theories because "some random" on the internet says that Obama wasn't born in the US.

The other case involves the people who say that Bush was behind 9/11. This is just as nutty a conspiracy theory. Some jokers made a "documentary" about 9/11 called loose change and put it up on the internet. Despite the fact that Loose change is RIDDLED with errors, misquotes and statements taken out of context, many on the Left swallowed the blatant lies and idiocy because it gave them yet one more reason to bash Bush. And just as Republicans are shamefully silent on the Birther issue, refusing to condemn the nutjobs, many on the left were shamefully silent on the Loose Change wackos.

It's simple: Don't ever trust anything you see on the internet, ever. And always ask yourself this - if the conspiracy/fact was true, why are only nutjobs on forums talking about it?

Funnily enough, I don't mind any of the things in the poll. The meaning of trolling on this site has now be reduced to "YOUR OPINION ISN'T MINE, YOUZ TROLLIN'!" in many cases so we haven't had a proper troll in ages, bad grammar and spelling doesn't bother me unless it's like the below quoted example.
