Ok this happens with new game consoles, games like WoW, every time the iPhone gets a minor design change etc. I just don't get the reason for the line ups?

The iPhone 5 came out today and I'm listening on the radio and there have been people waiting in line since 6:00 am yesterday. Is the appeal to say you got something first really that important, when in a few week you can just walk into any store and buy it without waiting over 24h in a line on the street? There were people sleeping on creates just to get an iPhone 5 because their iPhone 4 was just so yesterday.

I'm not that old I'm still in my 20's, but this is something I could never do. I could never wait in a lineup for hours / days to buy a product I have to pay for when I could eventually get one latter on without waiting in a lineup. When I see these people sleeping on the street to get one I can't help but think losers. I just don't get this mentality, people take time off work, sleep on the street like a homeless person, in the rain, snow, whatever just to get an iPhone that's a little bigger. Can someone pl explain this to me I understand that size counts but I thought it was the opposite way for phones?

FYI Since cell phones are pretty much portable gaming systems I assume I can post this here, don't castrate me if I'm wrong.

You are asking for all sorts of flames here...

But anyway it's standard herd mentality, to be one of the cool kids you need to own/do certain things, ergo people do it.
Actually we all follow one herd or another, just depends how low you go.

Some people like shiny things, others get it for prestige, others genuinely like it. Whatever.

I'll live I have my flame shield on max, but a lot of these kids are in their 20s, there was even a guy in his 50's waiting to get an iphone 5. I get the concept of "we all follow one herd or another" but IMO waiting in line like that has degenerated into the realm of absolute stupid. I honestly couldn't see myself doing that even if I was 17.

Some people really like the iPhone I guess... I don't get it myself, but if they want to wait overnight for it, power to them haha.

I'll be cuddled up at home sleeping... no phone is worth that.

And I think you're right about smart phones being a gaming platform, in my eyes they're what portable gaming should be.. cheap prices, smaller games and the ability to pick up and play whenever. I find they're the best portable gaming option at the moment haha.

Yes, I'm waiting for Iphone 4s to drop the price so I can get it cheap.

But what is business without fanboys?

Some people are super excited to purchase a product that they enjoy. I don't see why just because you don't understand it you have the right to judge them.

Can you honestly tell me you have never been that excited to buy anything in your life? I know personally that I have at one time and most people I know have at one point.

There is a big difference between being excited to buy a product and sleeping in the street and waiting inline for over 24h just to get it first. If you can't see that than wow just wow.........

I would line up for it if I had the money. Because I love apple products and they have best touch screens on the market.

You are free to explain the difference to me since you elected not to in your previous post except with the wow. If someone is excited enough for a product they want to wait in line overnight, for a few days, or as soon as the store opens it still means they are excited for the product.

Again since you don't experience the same level of excitement for the product, why do you feel the need to attack or belittle those that do? Does their enjoyment and excitement somehow negatively affect your world?

I lined up at 3Pm until the midnight launch for the last Harry Potter book and did almost exactly the same for my PS3. This wasn't so I could boast that I was better then everyone for finding out what happened before others or getting a head start on games, It was because I was genuinely excited and enthusiastic for these things. My PS3 in particular was something I worked really hard to get (how many kids at 14 do you know managed to pay for a game console out of a paper round and various odd jobs).

Although personally I don't see why the iPhone 5 is so great, I understand people who have a genuine love of the product and have worked/ saved to get it. But I get the other point of view aswell. My boss sauntered over during work hours and showed me his bill for almost £2,000 after be bought 2 iPhone 5's, more then likely to make himself feel superior over a University Student struggling to pay rent.

But really who gives a shit, when Mobile phones were popular in the 80's, those that had a screen were better then those that didn't. In the 90's ones that were small and could play 8 bit tunes were better then the old bricks, late 90's early 2000's it was flip phones were better, then ones that had camera, then video, then touch screen and so on till we got here. Let them spend their money how they like, but if i personally want to spend that much on a phone while my own battered one works fine, it better damn well have holographic projection or something

As someone who uses an Android phone for business and an iPhone for everything non work I get the appeal of both. The iPhone is damn convenient while the Android is more versatile but the interface, even with the latest firmware, can't hold a match to how easy to use iOS is.

Beyond that I like the screen on my Bionic much more than on my 4S, although I should be getting the iPhone 5 here next month and we will see how that screen compares. iPhone comes out ahead in the selection of apps as well, especially games. Hell, the primary reason I got an iPhone for my personal time was because a lot of games, like Infinity Blade and such, don't seem to ever find their way to Android.

All in all they really are two top notch platforms both iOS and Android. Android, is a great phone for people who are moderately tech savvy and people who like being able to customize every little thing about their phone and iPhone has a lot of appeal for everyday users in the selection of apps and the ease of use.

All that being said I personally am well past my days of camping out for consumer electronics but I can understand the appeal for some people. It's just not for me.

I think it's partially because people have no real purpose behind their lives, so when they get excited enough, they cannot bring themselves to do anything other than wait for the one thing they misguide themselves into believing is going to bring a change to the tedium they experience in every other aspect of their lives... Also most of the people who line up well in advance either are wealthy enough to afford that break in their routine, or have no regular jobs in the first place(the children of those wealthy enough to buy shit like that for their kids)... As someone who's been on the low end of income, or unemployed and struggling to feed myself at all, for the majority of my life, even if I had the money, I would wait til the launch craze wore off so I could buy it without having to put the rest of my life on hold just to "Get something" because honestly in life it's not what you have, but what you do that makes you feel like life is worth living, like if you have an entire day to waste just sitting waiting for a product to come out, volunteer at a soup kitchen instead, or if you have kids, plan an outing and take them somewhere fun(park, to a movie, to a sporting event, or just take them out into the world to see and enjoy life with you), maybe take the time to start learning another language, find a new recipe and cook it.

There are thousands of things that you can do while waiting for that next new toy, that will benefit you and others around you more than just taking up space like a sack of sand, wasting time you will never get back, life is short and prescious, and maybe it's just me(or people in my position) who sees this anymore due to the number of times my life has nearly ended from random shit happening...

I personally have no say over what anyone does with their lives, but I care enough to make the suggestion, that maybe getting that device "Right now" shouldn't be anyone's main priority in life, especially when they'll just be replacing it in a couple years anyway.

I've never felt that strongly for a product that I've waited in line for a long time to get it first. I don't think I've ever gone to a store and bought something on the first day it was available.

I would guess that for the people who do, the item is just that important that they want one as soon as possible, which I can understand. Personally when there is something I must have, I pre-order it or buy it online and have it delivered to avoid the lines. Sure I may not get it till a bit after those who slept on the street but I prefer the convenience and comfort of staying at home.

Eh. My mate used to say "Anyone who buys silver/chrome rims and lines up for an iPhone is a lebanese magpie."
Racist I'm aware...but I always chuckled at it and everytime I hear "shu cuz I need the new fuckin' iPhone" I believe it more and more. It's a p.o.s touch screen phone without a purpose for existence.

Eh, it's harmless.

And the only real losers are the ones bitching on the internet about the people lining up to buy a phone.

I wouldn't call them losers, because I don't do that... I will say they are silly silly people, and the waiting in line for something like this is a silly thing to do =p. You WILL survive another week or 5 on your 4S X3.

Don't have an iPhone, dont care for an iPhone. When I get new phones I go for whats the best on the market at that time (at a decent price), not what is more popular.

I think it's harsh to call them losers, but I voted that way anyway. :D

I don't understand why people would line up for that sort of thing. It's not like they'll miss out on getting one, even if they have to wait a week or something. Doesn't seem important enough to dedicate that much time and effort into.

My thoughts (and vote) exactly. I mean, why would you? Is it that important to get the new iPhone? Is there anything you can't still do on the old one?

...Aww, who am I kidding, this is coming from a guy who's probably going to go to the Halo 4 midnight release.
At least there's a difference between a game that spends two and a half years in development with a different studio bent on re-structuring a phenomenal series from the ground up, and a touch-screen smartphone with a few tweaks that's being released less than a year after the 4S and costs several times as much per unit at launch than what Halo 4 will.

I'll just keep re-assuring myself by telling myself that.
