With the rise in 3D movies and the first generation of 3D televisions sets now being found in the homes of wealthy early-adapters, will 3D gaming become the status quo for the video game industry, or will it just be an amusing, passing fad?

I really hope not; it adds nothing to games and will only add to how gimicky it is. I don't want to have to wear glasses over my glasses to see while I game!

eventually probably, but not for a while. Too gimicky right now but at some point it'll be worth it.

It could work. I'm not convinced by it myself.

Couldn't vote since none of the poll options reflected that.

Right now I do not think 3D can add much to gaming, but if it does start to appear in gaming I think it will only be a small portion. Or games will be 3D compatible, where you have the option to play the game with 3D.

I don't really feel the need for 3D in gaming.

Call me when they perfect Holodeck technology, that would be true 3D. As it stands now, it's a mildly interesting gimmick that really won't add much to gaming.

Yes. The only question is how long it will take. I don't think it will add anything much, but unless another Video Game Crash or 2012 intervenes, the vicious circle of graphic cards will inflict it upon us anyway.

I do believe if we go back to 3D its gonna be a colossal amount of cheap gimmicks. There might be a game or two that utilise it but for the most part its going to be what we get at the movies. A cheap covering they slap over everything to make it more "real" I guess is the right word for it.

So maybe eventually yes 3D will be great but for now I dont think its going to work out. Why not just skip the 3D and go straight for virtual reality?

Edit: As I continue to think about it didnt Metro 2033 have a 3D option for the pc?

My PC is capable of playing games in full 3D and I have used it when playing Batman Arkham Asylum.

Is it really all that great, well no. I tried it on Dawn of War 2 and it actually made things a lot harder to see in the game, and it didn't improve my experience in Batman either.

I enjoyed Batman just as much without the 3D glasses and actually I found the physX stuff much more appealing in the game as that did add something to my enjoyment.

It's novel right now, but I don't see it becoming main stream

I personally only know 1 person who's excited about 3D. The rest are downright negative about it.

Uncomfortable glasses over glasses;
3D effect doesn't look that great anyway or gives them a headache
3D TV's are hella expensive;
3D glasses are hella expensive;
Glasses aren't universal (i.e. BrandX glasses ONLY work for BrandX 3D TV's);
Other people in the house doing other things while not wearing the glasses can't casually watch whatever's on.

3D, for now, will only retard game development for the sake of the 3D niche. Game devs will water down the games so consoles can render for TWO cameras, (one for each eye,) instead of focusing all the power into rendering for 1 camera. Of course, there'll be an option to game in normal 2D, but who really thinks it'll be anything more than just the same texture rez, draw distance, physics, etc, but with 1 camera turned off?

3D will be the future. But were still only on Stereoscopic Cheat 3D vision which only creates the illusion of depth but not the adjustment of perspective.

Basically in real-life if your trying to read a sign and a lamp-post is in the way, if you just move you head a little your perspective of the world changes and you can read the sign fine. In Stereoscopic vision if you move you head a little the lamp-post is still in the same place blocking the sign. Stereoscopic vision is a cheat and really pointless unless better depth perception is needed.

Whoaaaaaaaa duddeeeeeee the pictures are JUMPING OUT AT ME!!!!!!!!

All in all, I don't see what 3D would add to gaming - it strikes me as being painfully gimmicky, and will also end up being unnecessarily expensive. And, as many have already said, the prospect of having to wear glasses while I game isn't all that appealing.

It would give me a huge migraine I think. The reason 3D movies work is your eyes can be relaxed on the picture. You aren't constantly scanning around with your eyes, and thinking about what to do as well. Part of what makes for a good 3D experience is when they literally force you to look at something 3D, in a suggestive and subtle fashion. Rather than being gimicky and in your face like back in the day.

Without some sort of focus, especially in a fast paced game, the 3D would be a huge distraction rather than an enhancement. The developers would have to be extremely cautious how they approached the setup. It would definitely have to be sparsely applied for it to be even a moderate success.

The only genre I think it would excel in would be something that was slow paced, or sports. Baseball and basketball especially. The camera distance seems ideal for me, and the pacing wouldn't be bad either. The absolute worst genre for it would probably be a racing or flight sim.

I don't see the appeal of it. It can't have any possible gameplay additions other than having shit fly at you and getting a migraine two hours in and I think companies who pander the fact that their game's 3D (Spare Arkham Asylum because that was in a re-release and the game was awesome anyway) are sacrificing putting effort into the gameplay and story to add on an unnecessary and painful extra dimension.

No.

How about the console market catches up with current PC technology and starts adding anti-aliasing. How far behind do we want to be here? When are consoles going to use DirectX10 or 11?

I've been bitching about this for a while now, because PC gamers are stuck with crap ports most of the time. Now, this E3, no companies are announcing a next-gen console. Nope, they're announcing "motion control".. oh, yay.. just what we've always wanted.

Meanwhile, we're going into 2011 and console gamers are still playing games with jagged edges, and washed out textures, and PC gamers are forced to take a bite out of it. Seriously, why would you want to play something in 3D when it's washed out, jagged, and overall crappy? Not to mention, you have to render the image twice for each eye, splitting the screen, so developers will have to make the game look even worse so it's able to run whatsoever.

Sigh.
