Poll: Is a good story REALLY a good thing?

i love story lines in games, when i play a game i wanna know that im actually doing all this stuff for a reason, not just mindless shooting *cough*the club*cough* once i finished mgs 1 i was like...DAMN!!! gotta wiki this shyt! haha jk, assassins creed has a good one.

I like a story but it should be a goal to achieve by your own means like oblivion, kinda, not some set path where it ends up like left, left, right, shoot top left, right, second left etc.

I think it depends on the game - Soul Calibur and Tekken trie to create back stories for their characters and they failed. Take Rock in the new SC4, how are you suppossed to feel pleased about botaining soul edge with him, when hiis reason for doing so was litrally " I WANNA KNOW IF iM A GOOD FATHER - LETS GO OBTAIN SOME SUPER AMAZING SWORD - THAT' LL PROVE LOADS..."

But I like games like Bioshock, COD4, Gears of war, that have good stories, but I am more inclined to enjoy games that don't have cut-scenes.

A good story isn't a good thing. It's a great thing, especially these days. Planescape: Torment is all the story you'll ever need.

The Half-Life series is my personal favourite series because of it's story. Sure, the gameplay is great too but what really sells it for me is how everything has a reason and explanation, and that i'll always be able to search more and more into the story and find something new. Things like Tetris and Garry's Mod don't need stories because making one would be unnecesary, but when it comes to a game that would make sense with a story, I always find myself dissapointed when it's cliche or boring.

As stated before, I love a game with a great story. It's an excellent game if the story sucks you in and doesn't let you go.

For example, I found Bioshock's story to be extremely well presented, as well as Half Life's. Halo's story (the books) were awesome, and GTA4's is actually very good for a GTA game.
