Hell no. How much money a product makes is never a reliable indicator of it's quality. Quality of things being subjective anyway. I think the basic things that should always be considered first when determining the quality of any piece of entertainment or art is whether or not you enjoyed experiencing it. Try to simply ignore your family members when they bug you about it I suppose, at least don't go looking for an argument about movies if you don't want one.

If people are willing to part with their money to experience it, then either the marketing is sensational or the product is actually good. How sales hold up after the initial hype (ie. if it's still popular after 10 years or so) that would give you a better idea of its true quality.

In the eye of critics: No.

In the eye of most viewers: Not really, but then again, they are the ones where the money is from.

In the eye of the Industry: Yes.

The quality of a film/game is NOT, nor should it ever, be measured by how "successful" it was or how much money it makes. There are a number of reasons that trashy stuff makes money that have little to do with quality or substance (usually marketing). Once you just accept that, you'll stop being so disappointed in people's taste.

And just because someone purchases a game or a movie ticket doesn't mean they necessarily enjoyed the product. High sales just means a lot of people saw/played it. For example (and not that I have any figures to base this on or anything), Duke Nukem Forever probably made a decent amount of money, right?

i dont try to start arguements.it grows into them ill say a few thing here and there .soon they would ***** about how im too picky about the movie.for the love of god people if your gunna spend billions of dolllars on a movie atleast act like you gave a damn about the scipt you made or the actors you hire(wow mr bay put a comercial girl in a high budget movie when mila kunis would make 10x the better choice then a women who only acting exp is looking pretty infront of a camera which btw one of my family memeber replied"it takes a lot of talent to be pretty ya know")

I have a saying reserved for these kind of moments. "I can go out into my yard and find a big steaming dog turd. I can take this pile of dog turds and package it and sell it on the internet for 15 dollars an order. Yet even if I sell 116 million units and become wealthy beyond belief at the end of the day I am still shilling a pile of shit in a box."

For some, it depends on who you are. For the consumer and the critic it doesn't, but for the producer/publisher it does.

I'm afraid that the quality of a game doesn't really affect sales all that much. I have the feeling that brand loyalty and marketing are far more important for that, and I think that is very unfortunate. I think a game's quality (which is very subjective) can best be judged a couple years later when you ask people who played it what they thought of it.

It can be an indicator

For example Avatar made so much as IMHO it was the first true 3D 'film' not animation, I've told people don't bother watching it 2D yet I don't regret seeing it in 3D and if it rolls out again/they get a chance to watch it 3D I'd suggest they do.

As a story...it was fairly poor, nothing original and the acting so/so at best but the affects were fantastic.

So in that regards it's quality in timing it's release and the work put into it shows.

Also consider the source

If CoD/Halo X edition whatever makes X milion, your not surprised.

If Unjuno - The Sacrad Band makes X million, you may want to find out more as this is an unknown new entree that's selling well, why?

...so yeh it's NOT a dead give away - but it can be used as a yard stick.

Psh, if Avatar can be the highest grossing movie of all time, that clearly indicates that quality is not represented in monetary terms.

I was going to put every variation of the word "NO" but I lost my dictionary.

Jokes aside, a movie/game's quality is not measured by how much money it makes. Its popular appeal IS, but not how good it was overall.

No, I have seen many crap films and played many crap games which were financially successful. A game/movie's quality can affect sales though, it's the reason why films like Black Swan, The King's Speech and The Social Network brought in so much around the time of the Oscars. As well as games like Minecraft, Super Meat Boy and Terraria being so successful. But overall, a game/movie's profit earnings isn't a reliable measure to go by when determining quality.

According to the share holders who decides who runs the companies, who decides when games are made, Yes. Sales is the only barometer on how well the game did, or if they'll continue that line of game.

As Extra Credits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/3524-Our-Oscars] noted, this is similar to movie studios, except that movies have Oscars, which the game industry lacks. Thus, the movie industry can make films geared not to be box offices smashes, but to win awards. Where as video games lack such a prestigious and widely recognized award, so its only measuring stick is the bottom line.
