Alcohol is a social lubricant.
It eases tense or awkward situations.
If you're with friends, that shouldn't be a problem.
Was about to say the same thing more or less.

Also if you are like me you drink for taste as well and its more fun done in a social setting.

As for the op it seems you were seen as being unsocial, not for the fact you refused to drink but for the fact you refused to join in on the group activity.

I guess a bit like not joining a game of monopoly a load of your friends are having.

Of course you don't need it. Some of my closest friends drink very rarely and some don't drink at all. That's not to say that I'd have anything against drinking, a night at the bar with good friends is usually boatloads of fun.

"to which i was told i have to go and drink to atleast be social"

I think he was more saying that you needed to come along with all of your friends to be social. You know, seeing as that is what socialising is, right, being with other people? I'm not sure he was stressing the group-motive of 'let's get drunk' as the only way you can be social.

I voted yes but i also think no. only reason i voted yes is because in ireland (im irish) all we can do is go out and drink. there isn't much else to do.

No.

Drinking with friends can be quite fun, but alcohol is by no means required. You can always watch a movie, listen to music, play games (computer/console, card/board and well as sports), talk about stuff and generally have fun. All without alcohol.

If you have to drink to have a good time with your friends then you need to find new friends. That said, I do not condemn alcohol, it can make social occassions that much more fun... so long as you don't over do it and make an absolute dick of yourself infront of everyone.

I'd probably need alcohol to be more like a typical partygoer, but I actually like being a wallflower.

People watching at its best.
Heh, me to.

O.P.: As several people have already said alcohol is NOT needed to be social but can help especially if you are a bit introverted like me.

Personally I very rarely get truly drunk but drink to get a slight buzz and be a bit more outgoing.
Mostly I drink because it tastes good when I drink (Good whisky and beer)

I don't need alcohol to be social, I drink it occasionally, but that's like, a glass of wine.

No;
You can smoke weed too.

But seriously. Alcohol is only needed if the venue depends on it: there really isn't much else to do at most bars, frat parties, and some clubs even.

Certainly not with close friends, but with random strangers it certainly helps. I drink more because I enjoy the flavour rather than to get drunk, although I will happily get drunk if it means enjoying the drink more. Plus, if I have had a few my boundaries are pushed waaaay back, so I end up being excellent entertainment for my sober friends. And it's fun.

Alcohol can help a situation dependent on the people, but if you NEEDED it to properly have a good time with your friends, it's probably time to find new ones.

I'm going off alcohol more by the day, because I've seen a lot of people who are decent get drunk and turn into dicks.

Also, drunk people when you are sober = one of the most annoying things on the planet.
