Its been a long time since I last saw a thread in a similar vein to this, and it came up in a discussion with my brother today, so I shall pose it to you, the lovely Escapist community, heartless bastards we all are:

Are any subjects, such as the Holocaust or MLP, exempt from having the piss taken from them?

No, nothing should be. However, I do believe you should be careful with certain jokes who you tell them around. For example, I'm not going to be telling any 9/11 jokes to people who lost loved ones during that tragedy.

Nothing is exempt from being made fun of. My dog just died on Saturday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.390331-Poll-Did-you-take-time-off-of-work-school-when-your-pet-died#15678717] but I'm not going to ask that everyone stop making dog jokes until I feel better about it. Hell, I made jokes myself about him in the thread that was dedicated to him :) If there are jokes that upset me enough, I'll just ask them to stop telling me them (or ignore them).

With that said, the vast majority of jokes about something controversial are just bad jokes. It takes someone who is VERY good at being funny to make a successful controversial joke.

Along with that, you need to know your audience. The funniest rape joke in the world is not going to go well at a Rape Support group...

No but just because you can make jokes doesn't mean they're particularly good. Leave it to the pros like Louis CK to make good rape/racist jokes.

No, absolutely not. Sometimes it can be a good thing to joke about some of the darker things that humans can do like the holocaust, as it helps us come to terms with it. Obviously the comedian should try not to offend too many people unnecessarily, but if it's a good joke then they have every right to tell it.

I'm pretty sure boring things are exempt from humor. If anyone says MLP is exempt, than they need to get their head checked.

I kid, I kid. Even my gloriously witty jibes couldn't manage that.

Making a joke is making a joke but do understand that as much as you have a right to offend people have a right to be offend and voice their offence. Just as a socially conservative person can be offended by liberal values, the holder of those liberal values can voice their objections. Vice versa as well.

I think that if you make a joke that is controversial you should be accepting of the fact that some people will have a positive reception and either live with that response or rationally and respectfully respond.

Good comedians can find comedy in everything. Props to whoever already used Louis CK as an example, he's got some great humor about 'awful' subjects.

Captcha: Best Seller. Hey, if Louis CK wrote a book I'd buy it.

Nothing is exempt from humor, but due to the painful nature of some topics, you better as fuck make sure your jokes are funny. Otherwise all you've done is said douchey things.

My 1/2 Jewish girlfriend hates Hitler jokes, but they are right in Mein Kampfort zone, Anne Frankly, I wish there were more of them.

Oh, I don't know. Some of them can come across as a bit Nazi, it can be quite off-putting if someone Goebbels on with them. Eventually, they just get Goering. Sometimes, Jew just have to stop.

Let me answer that question with another question.
Can a man with no arms hug his wife?
Can my dead cat say no?
Can my mentally disabled brother count his toes? Can he stop chewing on them too?
Can I survive a night with Oprah? Fat Oprah? With intact hips?
Should I be okay with having let my nephew spend quality time with the prince of pop?

No, nothing is exempt from humour but you shouldn't be an ass about it and you need to be considerate about your audience. You don't tell a rape joke to a rape victim or a 9/11 joke to a relative to one of the victims. That's in incredibly poor taste and you should be called out on it if you do.

All jokes should be 'allowed'. The trick is a) being good at it, and b) knowing your audience. If your humour offends someone, that doesn't mean your humour is not acceptable, and it especially doesn't mean that your humour should be legislated against for their benefit, it just means that maybe what you said wasn't the wisest thing to say around that particular person, and that you could probably do yourself a lot of favours by apologizing.
