Eh, there's perks and downsides to both. Niche communities then to be more tight-knit but that can lead to being exclusionary, mainstream ones tend to be more inclusive, but can get confusing with so many people in them.

SouthPark: The Ungroundable and Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers.

Honestly I think this pretty much is what is happening to gaming/"gamers".

It's why when I enjoy something niche, I pray it does not attract much attention.
Then do you also pray that it dies from lack of attention? Because that's what happens with a lot of niche productions- they get dropped as the creators decide to try something new that WILL get attention. They're not obliged to be stuck with supporting what you enjoy just for your sake.

Not to mention, it's rather selfish to want to keep something good all to yourself just because you don't like dealing with other people.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Being niche is great!....for the five people who love it.

The creators are almost certainly going to either move on from that project or they'll just leave the entire arena because most people can't survive creating stuff that becomes niche only.

Really, the only time something becoming "Mainstream" is a bad thing is when it's in the hands of creators who don't give a shit about what they're doing and will change everything that made it great to appeal to the lowest common denominator (see EA/Ubisoft/"insert your favorite AAA punching bag here"). But that's not the audiences fault; the creator is the one in control there and they're the ones screwing up their creation, not the audience.

So ... viewers of niche pornography are - across the board - rational, intelligent, and kind? Or are we excluding people who try to put mini-fridges up people's bums?
I think they're trying to exclude those people who like to be encased in concrete for days with their dangly bits hanging out.

OT. I like Halo and Half Life and I think they're great. And if I don't like other people's behaviour I do the shocking thing and ignore them

So Sung-Hwan claims to be "rational, intelligent and kind", as evidenced by the fact that s/he has niche interests, yet at the same time refers to feminists as "unholy scum". Seems legit.
Who gives a shit? Barring exceptional circumstance you'll never meet the guy (plus someone's online habits don't always correlate with their IRL ones), and the worst that could happen between your interactions is that you see werds he writes that you disagree with. Your Struggle is real.

OP: Meh. The internet made this problem much less of a problem, but it is irritating when I discover something wizard but nobody else knows of it in places I frequent, which effectively denies potentially great conversations because news of something like Worm [http://parahumans.wordpress.com/] or LUFTRAUSERS hasn't trickled into other's news feeds yet.

That bit of the OP literally made cringe. Anti-feminism is about the exact opposite of kind and rational; it is vitriolic, reactionary, and is only ever justified as good-natured by the same lame linguistic critique which has been torn to shreds time and time again.

OT:

Overall, I'm detecting a lot of edge, possibly of the young teen variety (although I could be wrong on that part), out of the OP. Liking obscure stuff doesn't make you better; it does mean the people you talk to about it will, on average, be more knowledgeable about that thing, but it also means you will not be able to socialize with as many people as a result of your media intake. Obscure anime isn't the best water cooler talk. Also, being more knowledgeable on a particular topic does not make you overall more intelligent. You could be the most well-informed person in the room on Flat Earthism, be able to cite hours and hours of theological and pseudo-scientific arguments for a Flat Earth, but at the end of the day, belief in a flat earth is still preposterous. That is an extreme expample, but it does demonstrate that being knowledgeable about a specific topic does not make you smarter than anyone else.

Haha, not even close, most of the most toxic communities I know of are set up around niche products.
In my experience, niche communities are either super-great or really toxic...
I guess it depends on what kind of people happen to be influential there, since just one person can have a huge influence in a small community.

People don't seem to look at being niche as a blessing when talking about obscure Japanese games.

In fact, many times in general, niche is used as an insult. Implying a game isn't good enough to be interesting to most people.

There are people who seem to think negatively on everything. Something being too mainstream, or something not being mainstream enough. Some people want to appear normal, so have a preference for more mainstream things. Some people want to seem more unique and different, so prefer more niche things.

And of course, some people just have more mainstream or more niche tastes. Both of these words have been used as insults.
