Don't be so quick to dismiss it, there's a major field in maths called 'game theory' and it goes massively into the probabilities, possibilities and pathways in game progression (one of the most advanced ones being Shogi).SilverUchiha said:So can I wear a lab-coat while playing games and call that a science? Gameology? lolRascarin said:The way I see it - if you get to wear a lab coat, you're doing science.
I'm not saying Math isn't useful for science, I'm just saying it's its own thing; it's not science.SckizoBoy said:Taken literally, maths is... but yeah, for the longest time, I was wondering 'and how does maths help me in the science lab...?' Don't get me wrong, I was good at maths, and loved it, but it's the subject that glues everything else together (bad analogy, I know), and why I enjoyed 'Donald in Mathmagicland' (awesome cartoon and good educational piece for kids, watch at first opportunity). Prevalence in the other scientific subjects is why it is considered one of the most important areas of study. Hell, I'm a biologist (after a fashion) and all I have to do is statistical analysis... chi-squared, chi-squared *significance*zehydra said:Well, I'd say that Mathematics is not scientific at all...
By my definition, science HAS to be experimental in some way, and seeing as how mathematics is purely deductive reasoning, I don't see how it could be.
I'm a scientist, and I wear a cowboy hat, and carry a compass and a hammer. Screw lab coats!Rascarin said:The way I see it - if you get to wear a lab coat, you're doing science.
You said it best OP. You should dump your girlfriend. Now.similar.squirrel said:The systematic study of any phenomena, to me, is a science. ...... it seems inherently ridiculous to discredit an entire branch of science because it uses a different set of vocabulary.
Well your girlfriend is wrong. Biology uses the scientific method, therefore it's a science. Same with Psychology, same with the other so called 'not proper sciences'.similar.squirrel said:My girlfriend takes the XKCD stance, whereby she claims that mathematics and physics are the only 'true' sciences, and that all aspects of biology are more akin to an art.
Well, you could be like this guy:similar.squirrel said:Tell me, what kind of career could I expect to get with an entomology degree?SckizoBoy said:Your GF is joking about I'm sure... hell, I used to be like that as well (well, when I was 12) until I discovered the joys of studying creepy-crawlies (entomologist). Anyway, taken literally 'science' is just Latin for 'knowledge'. Meh...
Still, these days, science is so interdisciplinary that physics is applied to biological studies in a lot of cases (e.g. single molecule spectroscopy, TEM and so on... god that shit bores me...)
BTW, *this* is my lab coat:Rascarin said:The way I see it - if you get to wear a lab coat, you're doing science.
